I'm a beginner learning what i can with a 6" DA, I see 5" - 6" pads when using compond wax the setting on the machine is set to # 5. Would you turn the machine down any for a 3 1/2" pad.
Using it on a motorcycle if it makes any difference.

I keep mine cranked up. I use a 3" Flex rotary slower, but the da I let rip!

you shouldn't have to go pass speed setting 4 (if you do tread with caution)
when using 3"-4" pads, smaller pads on the DA will generate heat quicker as well..
here's some great advice, got to the 5:55 mark...

The smaller the pad, the lower the RPM is on a rotary and a forced D/A(less aggressive)
The smaller the pad on a free spin D/A the faster the OPM(more aggressive)

I agree. I've never had an issue with a 3" or 4" at high speed with a da, especially my little Griots. But speed on a rotary, yikes!
