I only use rotary for polishing but not compounding. So I wanted to see how it is compare to DA compounding.

1. Do I need a wool pad for some hard paint? If so, which wool pad?
2. any tips before compounding?

The fibers of a wool pad are an abrasive in an of themselves when pushed against the paint with pressure while rotating. So if you need the cutting power then yes, get a wool pad.

We have a lot of wool cutting pads here at Autogeek, they all work. I'm testing out some new onces that I really like but they're not available yet.

For light cutting, a good buffing feel and easy to clean go with this one,

Meguiars Solo Wool Heavy Cutting Pad 7 inch, wool compounding pad, wool leveling pad, meguiars wool pad, swirl remover pad (http://www.autogeek.net/meguiars-heavy-wool-pad.html)

2. any tips before compounding?

I wrote some up here,

And here's a video, more RB videos in the works...

IF you don't have a spur get one. IF you're going to do a LOT of wool pad compounding do yourself a HUGE favor and get a Pad Cleaner.

Why would you use a rotory for polishing and not compounding??? Are you trying to jewl the paint? Do you have a D/A?

Yes, Mostly jeweling and DAT products with a rotary. Of course I do own a DA.
