So I've decided to refinish my rims. They are clear coated aluminum. I'm just doing the outer area...no spokes basically.

What's the best process to do this? Should I sand off the clear coat? Chemically strip it? THe problem with that is that I'm only doing the outer part and I don't want to remove anywhere else.

I want to get a smooth finish and recoat it with clear.

So compound? sanding? Anyone have any pointers?

They're not structurally damaged. They just have a lot of pitting and road rash and just look bad. Can't get them clean.

I'd try polishing the paint first and if that doesn't work then strip.

I wouldn't sand just because of the damage you'll cause and then have to remove later.

A chemical stripper might be the better choice.
