How to remove overspray?

Background info:

My father repainted an old car with Delfleet Evolution Single Stage Polyurethane Enamel. He told me he has 3 layers down.

Unfortunately he has overspray in some spots.

How do we remove overspray? We tried traditional polishing methods but they seemed to make it worse:

What did you guys try? Specifically I mean.

We used a compound I don't recall the name of and a wool pad on a buffer as well as by hand with a microfiber. The buffer and wool pad were on another area and the cloth was on this particular spot.

The compound had a similar texture to my Meguier's Ultimate but I think it was by 3M.

I didn't have any of my kit with me so I didn't hit it with my foam pads or compounds.

We didn't try anything else for fear of making it worse.

I clay it like Nick has recommended or wipe it off with paint thinner.

Ah okay. Should I just keep buffing on the part I have dulled? I can get the shine back, yes?

Compounding with an aggressive compound and a wool pad on a rotary buffer in most cases will remove overspray. It depends on how tight the bond between the overspray and the paint is and usually in a scenario like yours it's tight.

This car had some bodywork done and then a few panels repainted and re-cleared.

Afterwards, the entire car had overspray paint all over it.

This 1963 Plymouth Fury was recently repainted. As a by-product of the painting process, there was overspray all over the car. It was very easy to feel the overspray paint on the hood and the windshield but chances are very good the entire car has some level of overspray paint, including all the glass, all the paint, all the chrome and stainless steel trim and even the wheels and tires.


Interesting Factoid...
The most common place to get overspray paint on your car is while it's at a body shop for repairs or a complete paint job.

Tip...
Anytime you have your car re-painted, or even just a portion of the car repainted, while at the body shop, inspect the car for overspray and if discovered, point this out to the shop managers.
