Hi guys, I have a Makita 9227c rotary that currently has a 7in backing plate on it. I want to buy a smaller backing plate to use my 5.5in CCS pads on it for detailed correction work. I am not sure if I should get the 4-3/4 or the 3-3/4. I know the 3-3/4 will offer more of a cushion between the backing plate and the edge of the pad but will it be too much? Thanks for any input. Justin.

For 5.5 inch pads i prefer a backing plate that is at least 5 inch.

That's what I was wanting to use. Just wanted some different opinions to see if another size offers more advantage over another size.

I am not going to say i have the best opinion. Thats just what i use. I know there is more than one way to skin a cat.

I use 5.5" pads with a 5" backing plate and it's quite easy for me to control my dewalt... Maybe a rubber BP or a "foam" one will gives you the extra cushion you're looking for.

Provided I'm a novice in polishing, if for me it's quite easy to control a rotary with 5.5 pads... imagine you that you're used to 7" pads.

Thanks you. I ended up with the 4 3/4 flexible backing plate. Works great with my 5.5in pads
