Hi guys, I am going to post all my results here in this thread. I just recieved my order earlier this week and spent today doing the hood, the roof & drivers side rear fender. I have owned this car since 2005 and never waxed it and for the past couple of years it has been severely neglected as Ive spent all my energy worrying more about my motorcycles. Well today that changes & I have just a sneak peak for everyone. I am using the porter cable along with what is pictured below. I got a bit discouraged today and stopped after a couple of passes. Lucky I came back to this section of the forums for a little motivation and stuck with it. Should I expect better results as a beginner or am I doing good enough? Thanks for any input! I should have more pics next weekend hopefully. I didn't finish the entire vehicle today.

Firstly, welcome to the Autogeek forums, there is a lifetime worth of useful information here.

If you're using the Meguiars 105 with the orange pad you might be inducing some marring while you are removing defects. 105 is a no joke professional level product with a pretty steep learning curve. It's known for cutting hard and fast and having a short working time. Do a search for more information on it. The ultimate compound is like the consumer version of 105 and is more user friendly.

It looks like you are using 6.5" pads. You might have better luck with a 5.5" pad on the porter cable to maximize its power. Are you marking your backing plate? Cleaning your pad often? I would definitely recommend picking up a few of each color pad so you can swap them out as they get dirty.

Also it is generally bad practice to place pads on the ground such as in your picture. Even though they aren't face down the habit of putting pads on the ground is frowned upon. Even more so with what appears to be the wash mitt next to the pads. Inspect that mitt very carefully, even one missed piece of driveway sand is enough to completely ruin the finish you worked so hard for.

Read up more of the how to articles mike Phillips wrote he has a whole section on using dual action polishers. It looks like you are off to a good start, that body of mustang is my favorite!

thanks for the advice, I have 3 of each. I ordered the Porter Cable 5.5 x 7/8 Inch CCS Foam Pad Kit, buffing pads, foam pads, Porter Cable dual action polisher they are 5.5in pads with the yellow backing plate. I used the 105 to help speed up the process....I am hoping I will need less passes? I actually didn't orginally order the 105 but overnighted it as a friend locally recommended it despite hearing ultimate compound should be enough. From the pics provided is it possible to improve on the red and get it to pop & shine even better?

Here is another angle from todays work

Did some more sections today, however I didn't have my good camera with me so I had to use my cellphone camera as I wasn't at home. I am still finding m105 quite necessary to cut down on the number of passes necessary but mixing with ultimate compound to increase the working time. Today turned up the porter cable up to speed 6 for the first time though around the curves. I really needed my 4in pad but left the backing plate at home as well. I also discovered I need a yellow cutting pad after throwing a my friends 6.5in pad on. I also decided to hit the headlights with the 105 for fun. Upon close inspect I know it is not perfect, but as long as I am seeing progress then I am content. Can't wait to finish the entire car so I can finally take some decent photos of the car.

Bottom bumper now matches top, (see 1st post)

That is good progress being made, it's coming back to life. One thing I did not see in the picture is a clay bar (used to remove imbedded contaminants). If you haven't clay bared the car you should really do that first before you continue buffing the paint. It will make the paint smooth as glass and deep clean the paint. Then continue to polish the paint. You don't see many sn95s on the road any more and the ones you do see are beat to hell (just like the fox cars). A clean one rolling around is definitely noticed.

For some reason ive always liked that body style mustang. For a time I planned on finding a 94-95 and swap a 351W into it!

That's my favorite body style Mustang! (Though the fox body is my favorite overall; purely nostalgia!).

What a gorgeous, wet looking color!

Those headlights just got to go man. A lot of condensation in there, besides these would look awesome on the car!

If you don't want to get rid of them sand the headlights they will look brand new if you want to know how let me know it is easy you have all of the stuff to do it! Also looks really good! will be nice when done

The problem isn't just the normal oxidation/fading, they are also leaking; which is why he has condensation and moisture inside of them.

Ok I saw that and was wondering well the best of luck to you and like I said looks good

I did the drivers side door today, I haven't touched the front fender but to be honest I don't think I need to, maybe just put some wax. Looks like the numerous washes cleaned up parts of the car that I haven't taken the polisher too. The front bumper is in pretty bad shape and has some cracks in the paint So I don't think I plan to touch that either. Still wish I had a yellow cutting pad before undertaking most of the work that I have already done. I guess I removed some scratches but mostly just oxidation on the clearcoat? Also I probably need a polish for the future as the M205 is more of a finisher used before polishing right?

Keep working at it. You're getting some improvement. I missed it, but are you working by hand?

No I have a Porter Cable, I am just really slow & get tired fast and usually get interrupted in the middle of working. So have been doing the car in sections. Anyone know how long it should take to fully detail an average car? I'm new to this & despite people telling me to use ultimate compound I go straight to M105 because I don't want to do more then 1-2 passes(pass meaning going over an area 4-6 times)

Yeah you might as well toss the wash mitt after placing it face down on the concrete, it looks pretty hammered anyway. Get a microfiber wash mitt and treat it with TLC. It's looking good, keep it up.

Time to fully detail all depends on condition of paint. I first washed, clayed, M105, M205, CG Blacklight Sealant took me 12 hours. I have a Flex3401 with 5.5" LC Hydro Pads. M105/M205 is a great combo but since joining AGO I'm about to try the Wolfgang Concours Series...

You're doing great, keep at it, even if it's a section at a time. In the end it will be a real crowd pleaser as well as a you pleaser.

You've got to do something about your exhaust. Sticks out like a sore thumb! Needs to be cleaned/restored. You've done so well thus far, don't let the little things take away from your hard work! :)

how to handle that, micro fiber / terry cloth cover on the porter with some sort of metal/chrome polish?

Today I did the driverside fender, How come I cant get it perfect? Do I not have enough patience? or do i need something better then the porter cable to correct faster. I guess most of my scratches accumulated over the years are deep into the clear coat.

Also long over due cleaning on the steering wheel, I tried the woolite & water combination with a toothbrush, worked pretty well. I need to find a leather product to put on it now
