Hello,

My name is Nelson and I started researching 'how to remove swirls' after getting my Lexus GS350 back from a local dealership's body shop for a quarter panel repair and came across autogeekonline. I've read a few threads and seen numerous videos.

I recently picked up a GG DA polisher (wow, look at that, I'm already using abbreviations!) and several LC 6.5" CCS foam pads (yellow, 'orange', blue, and white). I hope to practice a bit on my 1990 Mustang LX 5.0, whose paint has seen better days, before touching the GS350. :)

I bought a kit that included Meguiars M105 and M205 and also picked up the Meguiars Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Polish. :)

Anyway, I look forward to continuing to learn at AGO and contribute if I can.

Welcome!

You may want to start by using the polishes from the Ultimate line. They have longer work times and may be a bit more user friendly to a new DA user than Meg's M-one-oh-whatever. Just monitor the temps of the spindle housing with your fingers to make sure it doesn't get too hot - and make sure the washer is on the BP spindle. Occasionally, the GG6 can fry pads for a new user using it aggressively, often with too much polish.

I live just a bit north of you if you'd like to stop by.
I'd be glad to show you "hands on" how to use a DA.
If you're interested please feel free to drop me a PM.

BTW - M105 IMHO flashes (dries) very fast during use
You may find (after priming the pad) that a drop or two
of Megs UC on the pad with M105 with reduce flashing.

For a newbie I'd probably start out with only Megs UC & UP.
Have you done any research on the Kevin Brown Method?

Well, after you mentioned Kevin Brown I *did* do a little research. :)

Man, I saw a few of Mike Philip's videos showing how to make section passes with the DA polisher and thought, "I can do that." :) Thus started my adventure on AGO. The more I read the forums, though, the more complicated things seem....

None of my cars has seen anything more powerful than my tiny Black and Decker random orbital buffer. My Mustang saw the Mother's 3 step (cleaner/glaze/wax) many years ago, but that's as 'aggressive' as I've even been....and that was with the little Black and Decker buffer, which, if I've learned anything reading on these forums, probably didn't do anything. :)

My Mustang hasn't been waxed in years. The bumper covers are pretty much gone, I think, and the hood/roof have some 'whitening' of the clear coat.

I want to try and use the 105/205 or UC/UP on the Mustang first, then tackle one or both of my other cars if I feel comfortable with the results.

I might just try the UC first since that seems to be more user friendly for a newbie. :) As it is, I think I already need to order a number of new pads as I "only" have 6, and no more than 2 are of the same type.

To clarify, the "whitening" of the clearcoat I describe isn't peeling clearcoat. I'm pretty sure I know how that looks. It's just hazy when viewed from certain angles. Otherwise, the car looks ok from 10 feet away. :)
 
Welcome to AGO from another member in Miami. You"ll really enjoy and learn a lot here. I haven't seen anything on it yet but if you can you should really try to attend DetailFest.
