So i ordered a $200 USD package. Applied a $100 gift certificate. I paid $100 on my visa. When i picked up my package at post office the declared value is $100*13% tax. So i was wondering cant i keep applying gift certificates to bring down the value to like $5 instead of $100 paid by visa. So autogeek will declare price as $5 instead?

I'm may just be ignorant of the tax laws in Canada, but that sounds like tax evasion to me. The value is the value - regardless of how it's paid for.

It's not a tax, it's a fee for watching justin bieber, take him back and we can talk about lowering the tax

Lying about the value of a purchased package to not pay tax is actually tax evasion lol.

Seriously compare prices of AG SHIPPED VS a CND reseller (eshine).

After you add shipping and taxes it's actually more expensive.

So... Who charges you the taxes? The Post office? Do you pay a brokerage fee as well?

Did you have to pay customs on the certificate? I wouldn't care. Pay what they ask and move on.

value for duty is just that...the value of the products ordered. price paid is what the taxes are charged on at the border. looks like an error in your case only being charged on 100.00.

any reputable dealer will not falsify an invoice to save you import fees.

The simple solution is to order your products if you vacation in the US. Then you can bring the goods back duty-free. I do that once a year for my detailing order and also for my cigars.

but my order from AG was $200. I applied $100 gift certificate so AG declared the value of the package $100. So i was wondering can't i just keep ordering gift certificates and make me $200 order worth $50 of declared value?

I'm going to say it was an error to report it at 100.00...whoever reported it, AG or the customs rater who completed your entry at the shipping company.

I get what you're saying. If it were me then I'd only pay with the gift certificates. I don't know how this is taxed but I imagine the post office is charging you? Screw em... If you can get your bill to say you only paid $5 then go for it. No ones going to say "well sir this box feels like it contains more then $5 worth of stuff we are immediatly reporting you to the IRS" the people that work there don't care. The only thing they care about is when their shift ends. In the off chance that some one ever does say "hey wait a min you paid for this in gift certificates which value over $5" just play dumb and act like it's your first time and you don't know what's going on. Consider it a loop hole found because some one isn't doing their job right. That's not your fault. I say go for it.

The major issue with ordering with AG is not the tax, it's the shipping fee. There are warehouses on the US/Canada border that can be used for delivery. You then cross the border, pickup your package and save the insane shipping fee. I intend to try this service on my next AG order. I will probably drop by the Harbour Freight store at the same time to grab a few things.

Here is one example. Trimex Warehousing and Distribution, Inc.

I have not contacted them yet but I have a friend who uses services like this one to order parts for his motorcycle and the way he explains it you pay something like 3$ per box that is shipped to their warehouse for you.

I think AutoGeek should setup something like this for their Canadian Customers, it would make both parties very happy.

Last year I paid over 600$ in shipping fees from Autogeek, not counting brokage and duties. Of course you would still pay duty when you cross the border but you save shipping and brokage so that is one hefty discount for something like 2 hours of your time to drive there and back.

Are you sure there is a Canadian government agency called the IRS?

"Go for it"...Yea, easy to say:
If it ain't your own hide that could be affected!

Isn't there a limit on what you can bring back duty-free?

I am not sure how duty free works, will have to check that before I go purchase everything. I have never done it before but I know there are limits on amount you can buy... will let you know once I made the inquiries.

I contacted Trimex by email after posting the message here yesterday, I will give you more info on that once I receive an answer from them.

Can't you just order from Canadian retailers? It seems difficult to order from another country - unless you really need one particular item?

Oh, sure there is. It's $750/person. That's after 48 hours. Kids count in that total as well. To be honest, they don't give a damn about merchandise, it's the booze and tobacco they're concerned with IME.

Have a look at canadian retailers then have a look at Autogeek. You will understand.

I sent an email 2 weeks ago to Eshine regarding ordering a pad washer with the detailer cart. They never even bothered to answer me. Most of the items I want are never in stock, it's always a special order. So I am done with that. Autogeek is the greatest place for detailers and I want to do business with them. My only issue is the crazy shipping charge, most of the time it costs from 50% to 70% of the cost of the order. So I will do my best to find a solution ;)
