I know that there is a mountain of posts on here for how to price but I haven't been able to get clear answers from them. So starting in June I am going to start a small detailing business in my driveway (I'm 16 so I can't get a shop). For a couple of friends I am doing their cars for free because I know that they'll be able to get me more business. For pricing I was thinking the following:
Hand Wash and Quik Detailer . . . $10
Exterior Package - Wash, Clay, Wax . . . $30
Tires, Trim, and Metal Polishing . . . $10 -20 (depending on amount of trim and metal)
Vacuum and Windows . . . $10
Interior Package - Vacuum, Windows, and Armor All interior . . . $25

I live in Northern Jersey (about 45 min from NYC) and I don't have any massive big shop competition that I know of.
So the end question is, am i screwing myself, the customer, or is this fine.

Also I was going to do an add-on of Headlight Restoration for $15

To me those prices seem low depending on how long those services are going to take you. Maybe I just work slower though.

ten bucks would be enough for me to pull my equip out thats about it. Man a hand wash and spray wax for 10 bucks!

Your "friends" can't scrounge up $10 to help out a buddy? $10???

I thought I was screwing myself but I wasn't sure. Any ideas on what i should charge for what I listed.

Do research on other detailers in your area and see what their charging. Then base your prices off them.

I can relate to you. I started my business when I was 16 and I charged about $50 for a basic wash and wax. The reason you can charge that little is because you have to earn peoples respect first and build your credibility. Once you start doing more cars you will get more experience and get better and better. Then you can build up a little money and buy better equipment/products that make your process faster or better and do more cars. At that point you need to raise prices. You have to realize though that $10 is what it costs to go to a car wash, you are doing a better job than that and the time it takes needs to be compensated.

Best of luck to you! Look forward to hearing of your success this summer!

How excellent are you?

I consider myself good but not the best. I can get a good shine out of a car but I can't do perfect swirl removal. I wasn't looking to target people that want perfect swirl removal but rather I was looking at people with daily drivers that just want a quick shine. I have learned how to get a good shine with just some clay and wax.

Thanks for the advice. To help build some credibility I am going to do some friends cars for free because I know that they will start word of mouth which will spread quickly.

That is a great way to start, I began on my own personal cars and on my brothers. Then people were asking who did the job and were blown away when I told them that I did it. I spent time watching videos on youtube and learn from there.
