Started My Garage Rehab!

Wires in conduit???

Yeah the electrical codes out there are strict. There are a ton of older houses there that have tar and cloth coated wire still in them. They will not let you use romex alone.

Beautiful garage, It is nice to see people do it right.

That has turned out to be a nice northern dream garage. I like the prospect of your fans and heat source to cover the comfort elements of 12 month work in Chicago!

BTW, go Hawks! Game 7 AT THE MADHOUSE ON MADISON!

Yeah, I don't know the electrical code, but this happened when we did our basement a couple of years ago. There was a lot of cloth coated wire that had to be replaced and it was all redone through conduits.

And I did a little woodworking today with my miter saw and my scroll saw.

Some of you can probably guess the final look of the garage at this point. :)

Yeah, I spent 8 years in the Chicago area. With a construction background a friend and I flipped a few houses. We had a house in Gary, IN that we ran romex and just put connectors in the boxes for the conduit look, LOL. I never heard of running conduit in residential only in commercial till I was out there.

Can not wait to see the final look pics. Excellent rehab.

Looks damn good man, congrats!!!

A couple of heaters and a portable ac and your gold.

Loving it Kevin! :dblthumb2:
Something satisfying about working with wood.

My father-in-law has a woodworking shop in his backyard. After retiring from the railroad he first built a 29 A Model, then started getting into woodwork. Made everything from shadow boxes to toys, to cars and trains, you name it. He used to go to all the weekend craft shows and sell his wares. Doesn't do anything anymore.... but BOY does he have some cool tools, (that will end up in my place before it's all said and done... and hopefully will be a legacy that my kid will learn to appreciate). :dunno:

Amazing thread. That's a transformation I would dream on doing when I get my own place. If you don't mind me asking, how much is the project running you so far?

Thanks for all the compliments!

I have enjoyed woodworking. Can't say I'm any good at it, but I have always felt that one should have a certain number of tools to do some basic things. The scroll saw was the first "specialty" tool that I have purchased. It's all been a great learning experience and very relaxing.

I'd say the garage is about 90% complete at this point. It is supposed to be hot over the next couple of days, so I can't imagine any work will get done.

Off to Best Buy or RadioShack tomorrow for some recessed speakers. Cabinets get delivered Tuesday, and hopefully by Wednesday or Thursday the finishing touches will be done.

Move in: Saturday.

From a fellow Model S owner - very very nice work! I'm green with envy!

Well, what good are blank walls if you like to decorate?

Started a little project this weekend that I finished this evening.

Step 1. Project an image up on the wall.

Step 2. Tape it off with various sizes of tape and plastic to protect your nice wall from over spray and paint.

Step 3. Remove tape and enjoy.

Wires in conduit???

NEC requires conduits for any 120V wiring. In Chicago, plenum rated wiring is not recognized either. If you run wires in a plenum space, you have to run those in conduit also... even Cat5/Cat6/Speaker cable etc. Good ole union cities! Sorry to be off topic...

False. Different cities require different thing. It is not an NEC requirement. If you were running single strand (THHN) then conduit is required. In residential is where different cities can require different things. For example, I'm in Council Bluffs, IA across the river from Omaha. CB allows exposed wiring in an unfinished basement as long as it up in the floor joists. Omaha requires everything in the basement to be in conduit no matter what. It's a Chicago thing, not an NEC thing. Sorry but I'm an Electrician so I had to correct it. No offense man.

I don't live in Chicago, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the rules and regulations spill over to influence our village. You walk through some of these homes of people you know and you can tell who's gotten permits for work and who hasn't!

Personally, I like the conduits. Since most of them are hidden, I'm not sure it matters in the end from an aesthetics standpoint.

Subbed for sure! Looking great Kevin.

Any plans of epoxy coating the floor? That was the first project I did in my workshop and I kiss the floor every time I have a spill, or it gets dirty and I have to clean it. BTW, I did it myself and it was relatively straight forward... but it was hard work :)

Garage looks awesome! Have to get the family onboard to keep it that way. Kids and life always throw a curve ball at stuff and we have to adjust to the pitch.
Union cities? The union is what gave us a 40 hr work week, child labor laws, etc. I was a union worker for the majority of my life along with most of my family. Now I'm not saying all they do is right but nobody does everything right. However, I will take the union way all day every day.
Now live in the deep south and while I like it, people work just as hard for way way less. And no, cost of living does not equal out.
