Hey guys so i have a customer i dont know how to handle. I joined a local car forum in my area and messaged the admin. I noticed on their forum they had a section for vendors and other local companies so i messaged the admin asking how to list my business on their site. He replied telling me that its $100 for the year. A few days later another admin messaged me asking what it would cost for a "best of everything" as he put it, package. I told him well "we have a few options. We can do a stage 3 which will get the car looking like new again, we can do a full paint correction which focuses mainly on the paint, and another option after a paint correction we can apply a paint coating." At first he seemed gung ho on the paint correction with paint coating so we set up a date to meet. He rescheduled twice because he was waiting on a part to come in so i kindly told him to message me when hes ready and we will set something up then.

Well two weeks pass and he sends me another message yesterday. He now not only wants a much cheaper package but he wants to work out a trade. The trade would be i do a stage 2 on his car which i charge min $150 but he wants me to do the other admins car and he wants $200 off the whole deal. Basically id do 16 hours of work for $100.... The problem is there really isnt many people on the site and the only active members are mainly "tuner" guys. Most of them have older RX-7 where the body panels dont match. Chances are the majority, if any, arent going to utilize my service.

I want to not only tell him no but HELL NO. The problem is i feel he kinda has me by the balls and can post on the forum a thread that im some scam or something because i told him no.

I would be inclined to making a trade of this nature and taking $100 off each of their detail if they were wanting something like a paint correction. But $100 off a package i charge minimum $150 for? Id rather just pay the $100 to be honest but at this point i think its out of the question.

Also part of the trade would be he and the other admin would post pictures and give me a good review on the forum. Problem is there is no guarantee of any business coming from this or they would even do a review.

How do you guys think i should handle this?

Sounds like more trouble than it's worth, particularly for a net rate of $6.25 / hour.

I'd politely tell him that you'll take a pass on his offer and no hard feelings. Doesn't sound like there's a lot of potential there anyway based on what you've described.

My $.02...

You dont have to do it...but you did contact them and it sounds like you now want to back out of the $100 too. Whats the diff between taking $100 off a detail that is $100 and getting the $150 then turn around and pay $100 to them for the vendor spot? I must have missed something.

I agree with you that he is being shady but maybe you need to stop communication with them through email/text/Forum and meet with them. This seems to be getting out of hand over what ever form youre using for communication

No its not $100 its $200 that they want off because its 2 $150 deals that they each want $100 off of.

Plain and simple, no.

Get your 100.00 back, offer 15% off services for the club instead, if they don't like that deal then gtfo man.

It definitely sounds funny. If you're determined to be vendor on that page, I'd pay the $100 for the vendor services page.

I personally have found that alot of the users on "Enthusiasts" sites like to do their cars themselves.

Ask him to share the risk. Ask him to pay for the detail, but then give him 25$ back for each of the first 4 details you get from the site. That way he gets his 100$ only if you get more business, and you end up only discounting those jobs by 17$ each.

Yeah that sounds like a hassle. Everyone wanting something for free. 150 is a good price to start with. Not sure what you are charging for a correction and coating but i hope its more than 200$

LOL yeah a paint correction is more then $200.

Well i didnt pay the $100. That was just how much the guy told me it was for the year. At that time i told him id like to kinda watch the site for activity a little bit before i paid that amount.

I like this idea.

DO NOT DO IT!!!! I have people like that tell me every-time...if you give me a great deal I will post a great review on Yelp...a website hear in the US that Rates service for a business.

Basically, it is Blackmail. How much business are you really going to get. How can you measure that? Once you start working all those hours for basically nothing....a real qualified customer comes and you have no time for him/her.

I would walk away from the whole site too. It appears (based on what you are telling) is that it has a little relationship to car, except this is for repairs.

In my business someone will come to me and say...if you give me a 25% discount I will become a regular customer and bring my friends. I so far have not accepted because ALL of his friends will be expecting the same discount. If you do not give that same discount 1 time.....all will complain and try to discredit you.

I say walk away and look for business elsewhere.

based on what you said thus far, I'd say no. lot of work for cheap. Glad you didn't pay that $100 "forum fee" yet...

Dude, i'd even post a review on there forum for you. best yet- you don't even have to detail my car! I did it already lol.

But on a serious note, I'd say walk away from these guys. these kinda people don't care about how pretty the car looks, so of course they want the best for cheapest because there is no way they will pay the real pro detail $ amount

not a nice situation to have been put in. the suggestion made by kneedragr might actually be the best way forwards, as it puts the ball back in his court. he can't run you down for not offering a deal, but at the same time he actually has to put something in to get something out.
good luck with it

Man Oh Man..

It seems like every time you turn around you're:
"Stepping in some Crap-(py situation)"!

With that in mind:
I'm immediately having you sent a "Sole"-mate!!

First off, he never gave you money. He's not a customer

Second: $100 for a YEAR?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?! That comes out to be $8.33 a month! or $0.27 a day! You don't think you can make your money back in a year? I would still get a spot in that forum. It's not the admins gonna get in the way or anything

Third: there's no need to 'watch for activity' on a forum. go through all sections on the forums and see which 3-5 are the most active (i.e. most threads started/replies). Then see how relevant the dates are. Then maybe you could see active members throughout the day.. boom.. validation of forum. Or you can simply ask for the traffic stats from the forum analytics

K i sent the guy an email here is what i said.

"Will you be willing to share the risk? Pay the normal price for what ever package or service you want. Then for the first 4 customers that comes to me from this forum i will give you $25 cash. The thing is i could do both your details and worst case scenario nothing comes from it. Best case scenario i get 4 details in one week from this forum and you get that $100 back.

To be honest i don't think a trade is in either of our best interest. It has a great possibility of creating bad blood. Say we went your way, I do 2 cars for 16 hours and make only $200 then not one deal comes from it. Id then feel like i wasted my time. Say we go with what I'm suggesting and I don't pull in one deal from the site. You would then think i screwed you. Sure there is a possibility this site turns into a cash cow for me. Problem is neither of us can guarantee that. You see what I'm saying? So unfortunately as much as id like us both to find a common ground and settle on a trade I don't think it would be wise of us. So lets just stick with our normal prices and work something out off of that. If you think to your self "your know what id rather do my car my self and learn how to any way" ill help you out and give you some insight to do certain jobs that require a certain skill set. Is that fair?"

How do you guys think that sounded.
