Non-Pro Coating Comparison Discussion: Which is the best coating available to NON-professionals?

I just picked up GTechniq Exo V.2 and I see chatter here and there about using it in combo with C1, yet nowhere on AG or the GT site does it mention this. Am I missing something? Isn't Exo a standalone coating?

ETA: never mind, found it in the application notes on GTNA. Looks like Exo goes on easily over clean paint, but is more fussy over C1. What are the benefits of stacking over just using one or the other?

I watched a video by renny Doyle stating c1 was more of the protection and exo has the crazy beading quality

Ok so maybe I'll hold off on the wife's car until I get the C1 and hone my application skill a bit. :D

Non-Pro Coating Comparison Discussion: Which is the best coating available to...

Definitely go with C.Quartz from CarPro. It's actually meant for the DIY guy vs the professional. It's about $30-$50 I believe on AutoGeeks site.

As most of us know C.Quartz Finest is the professional line, hard to get and only available to Authorized Professionals.

+1 on DP Paint coating. Spray and wipe very easy and no streaking.
GTechniq not so much.
C1 is easy to apply . No problem. EXO v2 is a different story. EXO flashes quickly leaving streaks. It dries so fast, I reach for a towel to wipe it off and it dries. Even while working in the shade, hi 80's temp.
I now have to buff my car to remove EXO due to streaks.

Time for a detailer's (hobbyist) confession. Okay fellas you can laugh now. I am afraid of all those coatings. I thought about C Quartz but I figured i'd try DP first if at all. Not to mention I gotta use all those sealants first.

I'm on round two of trying Exo and found streaks again, tried swapping application methods and no go.

Opti-Coat was not bad my first time and on my second time it's relatively easy to work with.

There are really too many definitions of 'best' to answer this.

I personally think DP Paint Coating and Duragloss enviroshield are great because of looks, ease of use, and affordability. My opinion is based off of sell ability and efficiency though, which to the enthusiast detailer doing his or her own cars is probably much less important.

I found the EXO applicator held too much product which in turn meant too much product was applied to the paint, resulting in high spots or streaks. I ended up using a facial cleaning pad found in the cosmetic isle.

What kind/color car? I've put EXO on two cars, and C1 and EXO on another and I haven't had any issues.

Initially I tried the supplied pad with a few drops, then this second go I moved to a standard applicator block wrapped in a suede cloth.

Red Jetta, just streaks after it dries. Tried working in a much smaller area this go of roughly 1 ft x 1ft compared to 2-3 ft x 2-3 ft evenly spreading it out cross hatch as usual. Buffed off with two mf's.

Both times little humidity, temperature in the 70-80 range.

Interesting that Optimum's new "improved" coating hasn't come up in this discussion. I guess 10cc of product that lasts 2 years isn't as attractive as it was thought to be? When Opticoat was available the answer to this question was easy.

I think Im going to give CAR bulletproof a try. It's pretty cheap & I've heard nothing but good things.

I've read about some people having problems. Glad I haven't. Does the streaking appear after the combination of both products have been applied or does it seem to be one or the other causing the problem?

Just applied my first gloss coat application today. Impressive. Going to be the top dog consumer product once word spreads.

What kind/color of cars did you do? I've got EXO lined up for wife's dark green Accord, but testing on mom's Sanddrift Corolla tomorrow. Also pre-sold a coating to a yellow Kia Sportage but will decide which one after testing the EXO a couple of times.

Mark, how much did you use (and on what size car)? Will 10 ml really stretch to two cars?

That is great to hear! I just took the plunge and decided to go with OptiCoat and became an Approved Dealer. I'm planning on using the Gloss-coat on my personal cars though as permanent isn't important to me and I like the option of topping it with something else. I'm glad to hear you have good things to say about it. Cant wait to get some and find the time for s full correction plus the GC.
