The green tape used to tape the car would have cost a bundle by itself.

I think I used 3 rolls, one thing for sure, I like to protect body lines and edges when it's not my car and I don't like digging compound or polish residue out of nooks and crannies.

I'm more apt to tape things off then not, and when I show guys how to tape cars off they can take from it what they want, they can do as much or do less, that's up to them.

Here's my thoughts...

"Polishing paint is polishing paint, detailing is getting the wax out of the cracks"

Here's another example of creative taping-off and covering up before diving in with a rotary buffer to a 1963 Corvette Stingray. This car took first place in it's class the following weekend at the "Plastic Fantastic"' car show in San Diego.

After wiping down and claying and before taping off.

Extensively taped-off. At this stage the finish had been rotary buffed twice and then wiped down in preparation for final polishing with the dual action polisher.

And then it's alway nice to have 30 plus Corvette owners on hand to inspect the result in bright sunlight the next day...

Regardless, tomorrow I'll start damp-sanding using the new Meguiar's Unigrit Finishing System.

:)

Awww, Mike, you always get to have all the fun! :dblthumb2:

This looks like it's gonna be a fun one, can't wait to see more pics!

Took less than 2 hours to sand down the entire car using the new Meguiar's Unigrit Finishing System

Then next step will be to cut out the sanding marks, for this I'll use the Makita RB and the Flex RB with the M105/205 Tag Team...

Also, will be using the new 4" Meguiar's Spot Repair buffing pads for tight areas... Nice system, makes sanding and buffing out a cured paint job faster than ever...

One thing for sure, I see a lot of talk about which polisher to get but when sanding down a car and then removing sanding marks, it's really nice to have both a full size rotary buffer and the lightweight Flex 3403

I "Edged" the entire car yesterday afternoon using the lightweight 3403, that's where you go around and knock out all the sensitive areas close to body lines, edges, corners hard to buff tight areas.

Tonight I knock out the major panels using the Makita with a wool cutting pad and then switch the Makita over to a foam pad.

Also used this car for a how to video on working by hand and with the new Meguiar's 4" Spot Repair Buffing Pad kit. That video should be up this week.

:)

Also took some pictures to show you can remove sanding marks by hand if you don't mind putting a little passion behind the pad...

This can come in real hand if you want to be extra careful around a raised body line, especially if it's not your car...

Mike,
Are you doing a full write up on this?
Can sanding be done with DA?

Yes.

I sanded the entire El Camino down using the Meguiar's G110v2 and 4 discs of #3000 Grit Paper. Even the lowest panels of the car where the Orange Peel was the worst.

In some ways it's easier than using an Air powered DA Sander as the electrical cord doesn't fight you like an air line does as air lines are not very flexible like an electrical cord.

I didn't try to sand the elky down as fast as I could and stopped while I waited for the camera man to arrive, but had I not stopped I was on time to do it in just a little over than an hour and I used about 2 cups of water. I took a picture of my spray bottle before I started and it's sitting here on my desk since when I finished and it looks like about 2 cups of water is all I used to Damp-Sand the Elky.

I could buff it out really fast but it's not my car and I don't want to make a mistake. I sanded right up to my tape lines and I taped very close to the body lines so there's not a lot of room for error. So I edged it and left the major panels for the big guns.

More pics this week, kind of have a lot of project all going at once, like usual.

Great.
I can't wait. I got a hold of some old body panels to learn wet sanding. Now I can't wait for a how to with DA.

Mike,
Great job! I have always used air compressed DA's and never actually used my actual porter cable before. Hmmm... might have to invest in the unigrit system once I get a client who needs this....

What speed did you use with the Megs?
