1982 Datsun (turn around)

What a terrific job done and a wonderful presentation, Kudos to both you and your son. This is a testement to your parenting abilities as well. Most kids nowadays probably would have never got past the wash before losing interest and returning to the video games. This thread is a sure show of integrity on behalf of your son and you and datsun as well. Thanks for sharing it , I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great job Tad what a turn around.Matter of fact looks better then some of the guys on here that claim to do details but are actually wash and wax guys.

Wow! GREAT WORK!

I am a newbe here signing in because of an '86 Pontiac I picked up. Looking to do exactly what you did! Amazing what a little work/care can do for anything!

Wes

WoW great turnaround on that Datsun!
Thank you!

Great getting the boy involved, he can learn to appreciate the work done.

Good show!
Thanks, and yes he truly appreciates all of our hard work fixing up his ride!

Niccee turn around. My parents did the same thing with me. My first "car" was a 1996 Chevy 1500 work truck. They said if I saved up enough money for a sizeable down payment, then they would help me with it. Now I drive a 2009 Honda Si and love knowing that I worked my tail off for it. The whole experience will make him a better person, plus insurance will be A LOT lower :dblthumb2:
Thank you!

I dont think they looked that good new.
Thanks!

Very nice job! Getting your son involved will give him a sense of acomplishment that he will carry with him for life.

Mark
Thank you, and you are correct, he definitely feels a true sense of accomplishment, hes a great son!

Tad,

Andrew did a great job. The turn around is amazing. I am quite impressed with him.

Jenn
We both thank you Jenn, and I too am very much impressed with him. We also thank you for your generosity of your gifts sent to Andrew;)

Awesome job! When my kids get old enough, I hope I can get them involved too. I can't think of anything more satisfying than sharing a successful project with your kids.:dblthumb2:
Thank you, and yes it is very satisfying to complete a project like this with your kids!

I have been waiting to see this detail for a while now, and all there is to say-WOW. Awesome turn around Tad. Shot, you do a better job than most that claim to be pro detailers, then again you do have the best teacher.
Thanks coach, we appreciate all of your help, and thanks for calling to see how it was going!

That is completely awesome. It will definitely be a flashback to the 80's for anyone who sees him cruisin' around in that! Great job to both of you!
Thanks and yes it will definitely be a flashback to the 80's, however anyone who flashes will also be of a certian age:eek:

WOW! Tad, you two really outdid yourselves! That is almost unbelievable.
:applause:
Thank you Corey, we really appreciate all of your support my friend!!

You should definitely consider yourself a pro! Wow! Nice to see that you got your son involved. Very impressive, overall.
Thank you for the kind words, we appreciate your thoughts...

That was incredible, what a transformation! Just goes to show how big of a difference you can make on any car with just a little bit of love and some hard work. I have to say though, my favorite before and after shots are the two engine photos; it literally looks like new.

So Tad, now you can set the lawn chair and start ordering your apprentice to do that for all of your cars (well, maybe not the Mustang because I know how you feel about her).
Thank you Christian, and yes you are correct I think he is hooked on detailing, he seems to really enjoy all of the aspects. However I think it will be awhile before I turn him loose on the Stang!

Wow! I'm impressed! :dblthumb2:

What did you use on the trim and the front grill?
Thank you, we cleaned the trim with DP auto bath during the washing, we cleaned the grill with APC+ at 10:1 prior to the wash. Then we treated both with Black Again, and after curing 48 hours, we protected both with 303 Protectant.

This just may be my favorite detailing thread ever… The story behind it, a father and son working on the kids 1st car together is very heartwarming and then, the work Andrew produced is really impressive!

I have to admit, I read this and turned a little green with envy, my son is 10 and I can’t wait to do something like this on his car with him.

Kudos to you and your son… Darn fine job Andrew!

Wow! Very impressive work Tad! It doesn't even look like the same car anymore!

:props:

Couple of comments...

First... nice save....

I coined a saying a few years ago that goes like this,

Take your car's paint to it's maximum potential

and that's what you've done in this project. You can't always hit perfection because of the condition of the paint won't allow it no matter who you are, how much talent you have or the chemicals, pads and tools you have access to, so the most you can do is to take a car's paint to it's maximum potential and you've done that here as well as the other coatings, surfaces and materials.

Next, here's a quote I learned from another forum member off the first ShowCarGarage.com forum,

"Each one teach one"

And this thread is a stellar example of taking the time to help bring someone else further up the road.

And last but least, I can't count how many old Datsun's I've buffed out and it's always kind of fun. I actually own a 1974 Datsun Truck that I use for a parts chase in Apple Valley, California and it's worth it's weight in gold because,

A) It's pretty much all rebuilt mechanically and runs great, is dependable and gets 20 mpg

B) It's a pre-1976 vehicle, so you don't have to "SMOG" it in in California and one thing for sure, I don't need the Government to help me keep my cars running.

Nice truck, but you ruined it all by putting that tacky BMW emblem on there!

Wow... Just an awesome job. I have to say this is my favorite thread too... now I can not wait to show my son how to do this too... Only 4 or 5 years to go. lol.

Thank you Christian, and yes you are correct I think he is hooked on detailing, he seems to really enjoy all of the aspects. However I think it will be awhile before I turn him loose on the Stang!

Haha, I figured. I am trying to do the opposite right now; I am 19 and am trying to get my parents more interested in taking care of their cars properly because I won't be around to be their resident detailer in a few years.

But that is great you have your son hooked, there is nothing like standing back and admiring those types of results!

Wow!! Great job!!

This is a type of project I want to tackle one day, making an old car look like new again.
Thank you Pie, We appreciate it...

Isn't it amazing how good a car can look even after it has been completely ignored for years.

Really nice job. I bet your son is counting the days until he gets his license.
Thank you and yes he is!
