I contracted myself out to a limo company from 1995-1996, working anywhere from 1 to 4 days a week, depending on my FD schedule.
They provided the wet/dry vac, automotive cleaning chemicals, polishes, waxes, etc. I used my own polishers and expertise. He also hired two other detailers while I worked there. They lasted about a week collectively...
The company I was detailing for had mostly corporate accounts, shuttling executives to and from the airport, etc.
The worst vehicles were the "party barges".. the 12 to 20 passenger busses rented for bachelor/bachelorette parties. A few times I literally had to hose out the interior due to the amount of puke and trash.. they had vinyl seats and rubber matted flooring... I also got 2 to 3 extra hours pay for dealing with biohazards...
Interior detailing is a must... as long as the outside is clean, the limo owners and drivers don't care about swirls... I did!
The company I worked for had mostly white and silver vehicles, with one dark gray and two black Lincoln Town Cars.
There were a couple of drivers who appreciated my work and would give me a few bucks out of their tips as a thank you, others were the cheapest bahstids on God's green earth who expected you to do everything and everything on a moment's notice.
The company had hired a new fleet manager after the retirement of the previous one.. he expected me to take time off from the firehouse and detail the fleet at his beck and call. I quit after a heated argument. He wanted to cut my pay by 50%... I told him to (expletive) off.
He had the audacity to call me a month later and demand that I come in, as his "new detailer" quit and he had a bunch of weddings booked over the weekend... once again I told him to (expletive) off. He then started begging, saying his job was on the line...
I was on my night tours of duty at the firehouse, and then on my 4 days off in the rotation and had nothing scheduled for details. I said to him "no problem.. $550 a vehicle, washed, vacuumed and spray waxed. You deliver them to my house... the sound of the phone being slammed onto the receiver was music to my ears...
