Gtechniq EXO Application Instructions with Trista

Gtechniq Application Segment
When you start the video below it will start at the point in which we're applying the Gtechniq EXO. On the counter it's 1:28:00

At the 1965 Mustang Show Car Makeover my friend Brian brought his girlfriend Trista with him to learn how to machine polish paint along with the rest of the guys. After we finished with all the prep work I asked Trista to show everyone how easy the Gtechniq is to apply...

EXO Application Instructions

Surgically Clean Surface
Surface to be treated must be surgically clean and free from any oils, waxes, sealants and silicones. Start by cleaning and degreasing any surface to be treated using a wax, grease and silicone remover. For this project we used Wurth Clean-Solve

Surface Temperature – Surface should be cool to the touch

Fahrenheit
Surface temperature must be at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit and no hotter than 104 degrees Fahrenheit for proper application and bonding.

Celsius
Surface temperature must be at least 20 degrees Celsius and no hotter than 40 degrees Celsius for proper application and bonding.

Smooth, glossy or matte hard nonabsorbent surfaces
• Dampen one side of a clean, microfiber towel folded 4-ways by spraying directly on to cloth surface.
• Evenly spread EXO over the surface to bet treated using a gentle overlapping motion.

• After applying EXO to one panel, immediately switch to a second, clean, dry microfiber towel and remove any excess reside to leave a streak-free finish.

• Repeat this process 20 minutes later to the same area to ensure uniform coverage, protection and appearance.

• Allow 48 hours for the coating to fully cure before introducing water or moisture to the treated surface.

EXO Buddy System
Using the Buddy System is a great approach for applying Gtechniq EXO that way as one person is applying the Hybrid Coating, the other person can follow their path of travel removing the excess...

Very cool! My buddy and I just applied EXO for the first time last night. And you already see the incredible results.

All I can say is to back you up and state that the finish looks just as amazing in person as it does in any of the videos or pictures.

Wow , what a finish on that stang

With a little luck, maybe sometime Yancy can extract the high definition footage taken with the boom camera and post just that section of the live broadcast. Oh yeah... that would be powerful.

Beautiful paint...kind of reminded me of Max's CRM C6 you did and finished with Souveran:

http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...y/31459-fuzion-souveran-dark-metallics-5.html

The colors are in the same family but different hues... but your bigger point is correct...

Beautiful paint

After of course claying, swirl removal, machine polishing and then chemically stripping and then carefully applying and removing the Gtechniq EXO

Wow. That stuff looks great. I want it. BTW where is Trista from? I see she has a TST shirt on which is a local forum in the PA-ish area

Trista and her boyfriend Bryan who goes by the forum name of TROLL just moved here from Pennsylvania.

I met Bryan at our last Detail Fest as he brought his Subaru WRX to show me water spots in the paint. We can expect to see Bryan back with either his Subaru or his way-cool 1994 Toyota Supra and of course his incredibly nice girlfriend Trista.

See his cars here,

New guy from South Florida!

Some very nice cars...

Hah! I knew they were from my area. Definitely has some nice toys. Now all you have to do is teach him in "The Ways" Mike. We'll have another addict I'm sure

Bryan is as meticulous as they get so I'm confident we'll see him and even Trista back here at Autogeek for more car detailing projects.

I really want to work on his Supra!

Great thread. That paint color is beurtiful!!!! Im the MAN:props:
I just purchased a 2012 MAZDA3 in a dark blue. Even though its a new car it looks like it was washed by a band of monkeys on crack!!!!
I do have a few questions about the use of the Wurth Clean-Solve. I've read on several posts/threads about chemically stripping the paint. I understand the reasoning, but would someone do it every time after they do a paint correction? Or is that for the "Show Car" guys?
I also seen in a much older post about using a Menzerna product to do that with and I couldn't find it on AG. What other products like this would you recommend I use?

Using a paint cleaner/degreaser is used to strip the paint clean before using a coating. You do not have to strip prior to polishing, as the polishing compounds will remove any old wax or sealants. You do need to chemically clean prior to using EXO. GTechnig in the UK recommends Panel Wipe, but I guess Mike P got them to approve Wurth Clean Solve. Another cleaner that
Rob said will work is, Prep Sol or Prep All, which you can find at Walmart.

Funniest thing I've read all week. Sad part is a band of Monkeys on crack probably do better work than some humans...

:dunno:

It's to remove any substance that could interfere with the adhesion/bonding of the coating and/or protection ingredients, (secret sauce), to the actual paint resin.

Or is that for the "Show Car" guys?

Anyone using a coating or product where the manufactures recommends their product be applied to a wax, oils, silicone etc. free surface.

I also seen in a much older post about using a Menzerna product to do that with and I couldn't find it on AG.

Chances are good it was this article,

How to Mix IPA for Inspecting Correction Results

And in the above article I have a link to the Menzerna Top Coat product but at this time I'm not 100% sure it's a replacement for a product like Wurth Clean-Solve.

What other products like this would you recommend I use?

Products used by body shops to chemically strip panels of wax, grease or oil. Lots of people get the name wrong so here's how it's spelled,

DampSanding31.jpg

I bought some of this and while it might work, it smells nasty and I ended up liking the Wurth product much better. Of course your mileage may vary.

:)

Correct.

One thing I would point out to is that not all chemicals used for stripping paint wipe well over the paint. If a product doesn not wipe well, or wipe easy over the paint it could lead to you inducing micro-marring from wiping.

So keep that in mind. The Wurth Clean-Solve wipes really well over paint and has a medium evaporation rate so you have plenty of time to wipe before it vanishes into the atmosphere.

If you watch the live broadcast video, when it shows people wiping the 1965 Mustang body panels clean, keep in mind for most, if not all of these people, this is the first time they've ever done anything like this and they were working on a real show car with a flawless finish.

One of the cool things about attending any of the projects I host down here at Autogeek is I try my best to get "cool" projects, sometimes projects that in the normal world the owners would never let you "touch" thier car.

:xyxthumbs:

***Update**

At the top of the first post of this thread I've added the live broadcast video and coded it to start right at the application of the Gtechniq EXO so you don't have to watch all the claying, buffing and polishing portions.

how many vehicles will one can cover? I know it depends on the size of vehicles but lets say average sedan size vehicles.

Since this is your first post to our forum...

Welcome to Autogeek Online! :welcome:

how many vehicles will one can cover? I know it depends on the size of vehicles but lets say average sedan size vehicles.

Rob over at Gtechniq says in the demo video with Kelly Harris at KDS Detailing that you can get 4-6 cars.

How many cars you can get out of one can is going to be dependent upon to very important factors.

  1. Size of car or total panel surface areas to be covered
  2. Users skill and technique to be efficient with the product

Great question though...

Here's' the video with Kelly applying the EXO and Rob doing the play-by-play...

Which of the Cobra towels would work for applying EXO? I have the Gold Plush Jr., a few Miracle towels, and the black all purpose towels, as well as the green Detailing Cloths. Also, could you use a microfiber applicator instead of a microfiber towel for application, or would that not work? I'm just kinda confused as to why you're supposed to use a towel instead of an applicator. If you're using a towel, how many panels can you ideally do before you need a fresh towel? Do you need to wash the towels right away afterward?
