Is the way to determine if you need a compound vs a polish to start with a test spot with the least abrasive product first and see if that removes the defects from the paint? And if it doesn't, move to a more abrasive product? Are there specific pad types that better match to SMAT tech vs DAT?

I recently watched this detailing video from Chicago Auto Pros (YouTube) and rather than using quick detailer or clay bar lube when claying, they just used a foam cannon with car wash soap. Does anyone else do this? Looks more efficient than using QD. Thanks!

I've always applied it straight with a foam applicator. I know that some prefer the 1:1 product:water dilution and to use an airgun though.
