I wouldn't take that risk unless absolutely necessary, given that hot water will do the trick in a matter of minutes. But in the event you don't have access to hot water, and must try the microwave, I'd suggest warming it slowly under low power.

For a while, I wouldn't apply any sort of protectant. I'd just stick with cleaning with distilled water wherever possible, and something heavier where necessary. But I'd always finish with plain distilled water.

I guess my concern with this method would be towel-drying with surface contaminants present, due to the fact that some may have been left behind from the no-touch wash stage.

I'm an amateur/weekend warrior and don't have first-hand experience with using it on a headliner, but perhaps you may wish to research 303 Multi-Surface Cleaner (formerly called 303 Fabric/Vinyl Cleaner). Hopefully more-experienced detailers will offer more tested advice though.
