    i had marks on the mounting plate so i know it was rotating. For the thickness, at what point would you back off? my understanding is that the meter will give you thickness from clear all the way down to primer... is there a general thickness to the clear coat? i might invest in a meter, but...

    the vehicle is ~1988. it's a friend's Mercedes 190e-16v. I was just slightly disappointed at the amount of deeper swirl marks that wouldn't come out, but like i said in original post, i wasn't compressing the pad that hard ... it's such an awesome car, wanted a mirror shine!

    thanks for the suggestions. i'll try to put more pressure i noticed in mike's videos, there's a lot of compression on the pads, so i guess he's pushing down pretty hard also. is it okay to spin the pads w/o contact to a surface? i think i read somewhere it's bad for the bearings?

    so i've been doing roughly 2ft x 2ft sections at a time with maybe 5-6 passes going roughly 1-2in / second. machine speed was 6. i wasn't using that much pressure, maybe 1-2lbs more than the weight of the machine. i'll try more pressure. will try to prime the pad also, but how does that help...

    suggestions for these deeper swirl marks?

    So i just started getting into detailing and started with a porter cable, CCS Orange pad with Meguiars #105. It took out a lot of the superficial scratches, but some deeper ones remain, any suggestions other than going rotary?
