Careful with the M40 vinyl and rubber, it makes the mats pretty slippery. I have had better luck with meguiars hyper dressing.
After cleaning, I lightly mist it on at a mild dilution ratio while mats are still wet. Dry looking brand new and are surprisingly not very slippery IMO.
Not sure why peeling it off in sheets makes you laugh? I plasti dipped the front end of my car and my wheels for the winter. This spring I peeled each section off in one piece. You just need to catch an edge.

Griots undercarriage spray is by far my favorite. It's not super cheap, but not too spendy either. It also comes in gallon size and it does a great job at "darkening"
