We finally bought our first smartphones and we're in the 14 day grace period where we can still switch phones should we decide to.

I actually bought a Galaxy S5...probably should have waited on the S6 considering it'll be out any time now...but I'm not sure I like the Galaxy. I had my mind set on getting and IPhone at first anyway and decided at the last minute not to get it. Now I'm wishing I had the IPhone.

It's not that I can't figure out how to use the Galaxy, I'm just not sure I need all the extra customization.

When speaking with phone reps 5 of 6 were actually Galaxy users, but there's a caveat. When those 5 Galaxy users found out these would be our first smartphones they quickly changed their recommendation and told me to go with the IPhone...5 of 6. They all said for first time users that the IPhone is much easier to use.

I had originally wanted the IPhone so that I could take pictures and Air Drop them into an IPad or MacBook. (Yes, Galaxy can do it 5 different ways and they demo'd 2 ways...which were nowhere near as fast as AirDrop...and I only need one fast way.)

So here's a few questions.

1. What are some examples of how the IPhone is easier to use over the Galaxy? I like Air Drop to an IPad or MacBook.

2. You Galaxy lovers can make comparisons too and by doing so you might convince me to keep the phones I have.

I like that Apple doesn't offer apps not made, or at least endorsed, by them.

In general, I'd like to hear some comparison input from Apple lovers.

This phone or that phone, it's a highly subjective question. I've used all generations of Android and my wife and kid have had iPhones. It's not so much the Samsung phone you're talking about, it's the operating system. IOS vs Android. I prefer Android and I own a mac book and an ipad, ipod etc.

What are you going to use the phone for? If your going to use it as a phone and camera and that's about it go with the IPhone. The operating system is simpler. If your going to use the phone for everything it's capable of I would go with the Galaxie.

Ive had the note 2,3 &4. My kids all have iphone6's. Iphone are much more user friendly. Galaxy has expandable memory. Iphones have a higher resale value. Nothing beats facetime. Like you. I have an ipad & macbook. I should have gotten the 6+.... but then again. I look so cool when i talk to my watch

So I was in a similar situation just now.

My upgrade is not up until June and I needed a phone. I tried out the iphone 6 and 6 plus. I had to also buy it outright. That being said, I really enjoy the Google suite of apps and services more than I do with Apple.

I did like how fluid the cameras on Apple phones work and the app selection.

In the end, I settled on the S5 for ATT because of the google set of apps and services. With a few installs, I was able to remove the clunky stock Samsung launcher and put a stock android look and feel to it, and you can just do so much with Android.

I dont think there is anything quite like air drop but again that is Apple building their ecosystem. I just send things I want to share to dropbox which syncs across all my devices.

You literally just go to gallery, hit share button, boom its now in My Pictures and any other device I have dropbox on.

In the end, I like the Galaxy. If you're technologically savvy at all, you'll find yourself wanting to do more than what iOS lets you. Now I do like Apple more for my tablet.

As someone who has owned an iphone 2gs/5/5s/6/6 plus and many Android phones, I prefer Android for my phone uses. I do hear you on the apps being only what Apple approves but on Android, there are some great apps because you can do more with the OS. There may not be as many free apps quality wise but I'm very happy now with Android as my main phone. I keep trying Apple here and there but always come back to Android.

Galaxy s5 is the worst phone I ever touched.

iPhone 6 rocks ..

I have Verizon. I'm dying for the google nexus 6. Its been available for every carrier since November but Verizon hasn't released it yet! Grr

I had and iPhone 4 then a GS3 (which suuuuucked after a year or so, for various reasons) but jumped on a GS5 this last black Friday when they were free with contract extensions. I haven't played with the iPhone 6 but I'm sure it's pretty fast. I do miss Facetime since my wife's work requires Apple phones for their email set up but we can just use Skype. Not as seamless but it gets the job done. I've got wicked battery time with my Galaxy and it's water/dust proof to a certain degree. I'm not careless but it's peace of mind. I also used a different launcher which it's little customizations like that which sway me toward the Android side. I don't think I'll ever go back to Apple because they're more expensive and I hate their proprietary charge cables. I threw on a Spigen Tough Armor case and Zagg glass screen protector and it's a stout little phone. I'm sure we'll spring for the iPhone 6 plus for the wife when she decides to trade up. You can still use an Android for your first phone to learn about tweaking and customizing it to your liking. I don't think you'll regret it.

I made the leap from an Iphone 4S to a Galaxy S5 a few months ago, despite my family being deeply burried in the iOS universe.

The only thing I don't like about the S5 is the size. I would prefer the size of the iPhone 6, but that is about it. Once I learned my way around Android and the Google app family, I found I liked it far better than iOS. The amount of customization from things like add-on launchers (NOT rooting), and the amazing array of widgets truly changed the way I use my phone. I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to iOS.

We finally bought our first smartphones...
Congratulations Bill...

We, too, just recently got our first smartphones.
Got used IPhone 5s during the (IPhone 6)trade-in sales.

So easy that even Caveman-Bob can use it. :dblthumb2:

You bring up a good point...and I own a Galaxy.

The iPhone build quality is far above other phones on the market. From a physical device standpoint, the only advantage I see in the Galaxy is the display and the battery. The materials used in the Galaxy S5 are pretty cheap and it looks cheap. Fortunately, I put it in a slim case, and it doesn't bother me as much.

I doubt I'll ever go back to an iOS device after using Android. However, I will be more selective in my choice of device from a build quality stand-point. If I had to replace my phone today, I'd looks at the HTC One or Moto X. Their batteries aren't as good, but material quality are far better and displays are very close to Samsung.

The reason I like the Apple 'stuff' and the main reason I started looking at Apple in the first place:

1. IMac's and MacBooks have a program for pictures that has face recognition, I am told. The idea is to, for example, have pictures of my son in a folder just for his pictures, but at the same time the face recognition allows me to pull pictures of him (becasue of face recognition) from any folder. For example, a family reunion folder would also contain pictures of my son and when I call for pictures of him I would get them from every folder, not just his personal folder. This is an awesome feature, but I do NOT know if the same app is available for the IPad or IPhone. If it is, it's a done deal.

2. Take good enough (loose terminology I know) quality pictures of detailing work, either by camera or by phone, and put those pictures on a tablet for potential customers to see. I can do this with Android, but the iOS makes this a seemless step especially when using the phone to take the pictures.

3. I am told that with some, if not most apps, when you buy them or download them you own them and can be be shared with other Apple devices. Another big plus if that's truly the case?

In my case having never owned a smartphone before...

You don't know what you don't know.

What are you going to use the phone for? If your going to use it as a phone and camera and that's about it go with the IPhone.

The main reason in getting smartphones was to always have a camera available for spur of he moment family photos.

The GS5 has a 16 mp camera and the IPhone only an 8mp camera. The difference in mp's will obviously make a difference, but someone also told me that the IPhone has better lenses possibly made by a few of the lens makers I'm aware of like, Zeiss, Leica, and Swarovski, though I don't know which.

Ive had the note 2,3 &4. My kids all have iphone6's. Iphone are much more user friendly. Galaxy has expandable memory. Iphones have a higher resale value. Nothing beats facetime. Like you. I'm aware of the resale value and appreciate the reminder. I like the expandable memory of the GS5, but if I get the IPhone I'll likely get a 64G phone which should suffice since most photos at some point, should the phone get full, will be pushed to the tablet or put on disk...or even the cloud...forgot about the cloud.

The only thing I don't like about the S5 is the size. I would prefer the size of the iPhone 6, but that is about it. The size of my GS5 is another thing that bugs me. Don't get me wrong, I love the size of the screen, but it makes it hard to hold onto while accessing the apps with one hand even in one hand mode. It will be worse with a case on it. The slightly narrower IPhone 6, is just enough smaller to make the difference for me. That's why I absolutely love the IPhone 5c, but of course if I want a new phone I want the latest technology even if at this time I can't use it all. LOL!

Congratulations Bill...

I resemble that Caveman coment. LOL! I will also take it into consideration. Thanks, Bob.

I'm sure that at some point I might like and use all the features of the GS5, I'm just not sure at this point if I need all the custimization when I need user friendliness and functionality.

If you already have an iPad & MacBook it would be weird to even consider the Samsung. We are a full apple house and I couldn't be happier, the ease of use and being able to share things between the iPad, iPhone & MacBook is awesome. I would swap out the Samsung for the iPhone.

I'm sorry for the confusion.

I don't own an Ipad or Mac, but that was a goal, which is why I had originally settled on the Iphone. I basically went with the GS5's to save money. Now I wish I'd have spent the change for the apple phones and I have 2 days yet to decide.

Bill I recently got the wife to switch to a new iphone 6+ from a note and she couldn't believe how simple the OS is. We both now have the 6+ and have no regrets.

I would go iPhone all the way. If you want a phone that is secure and is simple to use then get an iPhone. I'm a car audio installer and Android gives us headaches. There are so many different versions of it and so many different devices run it that there is bound to be compatibility issues. All the technophiles go on and on about "you can do this and that" with Android but really, who cares? Most people use their phone to make calls, send messages, email and surf the net, all of which the iPhone does brilliantly.
