Hello

I have glue residue on my rims from what looks like previous wheel weight placement. I was curious as to how to remove it.
I tried Goof off and some wheel cleaner and they really did nothing..
So I picked up some 3m Adhesive Remover and I scraped off what appears to be the top most of the glue but I still can't get the rest off. I just hope it can be removed. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I usually use the 3M Adhesive Remover and a plastic razorblade. That usually removes all of the residue left behind for me.

Try heating the glue up and lightly scraping with a plastic razor or try bug and tar remover

Thanks for the help. I'm going to try heating it up next like you said and then scraping and spraying like I was doing.

That looks like a clip on wheel weight...tape weights are on the inside of the wheel barrel...

3M adhesive remover should work, but you have to let it dwell and be patient. A plastic blade will help as noted above.

As Rasky said, that's a clip-on weight (no glue) and it doesn't look like you could even put a stick-on weight in that area (would have to go in the barrel). To me that looks like corrosion (which may have been initiated by galvanic action between the weight and the wheel).

Rasky is right. I didn't even notice the weight was still clipped on the wheel. I thought it had been removed and there was some adhesive on the back of the weight to assist in securing it even more firmly. Now that I look again, I can see the clip at the bottom.

I originally used an old plastic card and then switched to a plastic blade. The adhesive remover definitely took a lot off but toward the end I seemed to be removing more plastic than adhesive...so it could very well be corrosion.

Theres more not pictured along the lip of the rim near the tire but it seems to be a single strand of adhesive or whatever it is. That made me think it was glue since it isn't all around the weight.

From my experience with corrosion there isn't much you can do..but is that the case here..?

To me it just looks like typical clearcoated alumimum wheel corrosion, caused by winter salt and accelerated in the presence of an uncoated lead/steel wheel weight which causes a galvanic couple when combined with an electrolyte (salty water).

And no, not really much you can do about it.

Alright...thanks for clearing that up though. I will try to at least remove all the excess like I had to minimize the appearance a bit. Maybe by some luck some of it will come off completely where the corrosion isnt too bad.
Thanks for the responses and help everyone

+1

For tape on wheel weights on the inside: To remove the sticky adhesive I first wipe it down to remove the dirt and then use the 3M stripe off wheel. The strip off wheel removes the sticky residue in about 30 seconds and then just wash the wheel to get any residual dirt off.

You have got to move that wheel weight to the inside barrel.

I had mine done for $14 per wheel at Discount Tire.

Looks so much better.

The wheel coating with start to peel once it starts to corrode under the weight.
