Already planning for spring, I've decided to go for a ceramic coating on my Camaro. Probably Gyeon CanCoat because I'm cheap and broke. But I want to do a complete and total prep before applying the coating: Wash (Meg's Hyperwash), Physical decon (To be determined), Polish (Poorboy's SSR1), Coating Prep (Gyeon Prep) and finally the CanCoat.

I have no problem getting a new claybar or two, but I am wondering if a quality mitt would work better.

Go with a Mitt and thank me later. Use a small 1 gal pale of very soapy water as your lube. My process is to wash, Iron X, De-tar it aka TRIX or like, then once rinsed, I go around with the mitt and soapy water Here's the Mitt I use . I also have 4 or so Nano Sponges for smaller areas. I used to use them exclusively but they are smaller and I wanted to cover ground quicker is why I moved up.

Those are a little pricey compared to clay bars. How many times can you decontaminate your car with one of those?
Does the efficiency decrease after each use?

Are you referring to the Nanoskin clay mitts? They can last through a ton of vehicles. I think the most important thing is to ensure you put it away once you’re done and not allow it to get abused and collect dust or sit out in the sun etc.. As long as you put it away they last a very long time and no their effectiveness doesn’t gradually diminish, IME it simply hits the wall once it’s done. I’ve only had that happen to 1 mitt and there’s no mistaking when it happens.

Thanks Eldorodo, I think I will have to order one.

I have the Nanoskin Blue Wash mitt and have never used traditional clay again. As for CanCoat, it is a really great product. I used it for a few of the details last year. I am on my 2nd bottle too. Very forgiving product if you mess up too.

Happy New Year!

I hate claying, so I have ordered many alternatives.

My favorites are the nanoskin mitts/sponges and I also like Griot's synthetic clay sponge. The round palm grip shape is very user-friendly.

Another affordable clay mitt option is the Blackfire clay mitt. I have 3 but the first one still works like new.

While I personally generally prefer clay this is a really nice product. Have been enjoying using it since it came out....

Optimum Ultra Clay Towel

I'm really stuck between the mitt/towel. I know either can't be bad. Do you find the towel cumbersome to keep a grip on? Do you usually fold it up and work it across the paint that way? The mitt seems like it would have more "heft" to hold on to, which is kind of why i've been leaning towards it. Would love to hear your feedback though.

I would say a personal preference. I prefer the towel to get in the tighter areas like under door handles and in genersl it can be more precise. I usually don’t t fold this towel. It’s pretty easy to keep a hold of.
The mitt is a bit easier to hold on to for sure but also more cumbersome. Guess it’s kind of a trade off.

I prefer the mitts because they are easier to hang on to and not drop. I also use really soapy water plus a grit gard.

I got Griots and nanoskins with the foam backing as I figure easy to hold on too. Good point about door handles though...

I recently bought a clay towel with microfiber backing. I like it on any small curved surface as mentioned. I didn’t fold as it made it harder to slide across the surface. When it slides over tar it tended to stain the towel which kind of annoyed me but I as said before it’s nice on small curved surfaces.
