    Alum polished wheels scratches

You have to be careful on rims that are coated. I would first try a cleaner wax by hand. Keep the pressure light as the clear on rims aren't as tough as the clear on the vehicle. The second option would be to strip the clear off and start all over again, but that's a ton of work.

It seems to be a lot of steps taken to achieve those results. I would think that you could have gotten there with the right compound/pad combo.

Flex 3401 - Variable Speed Is Kaput!

Those are the 3 main things that usually go wrong with any polisher. Switch, cord, and speed control. The brushes are normal wear and tear but I haven't had to change mine in a couple of years.

Flex 3401 - Variable Speed Is Kaput!

These things have been known for their bad cords, but yours sounds like a bad speed control knob. Mine quit after a couple of years and would only work whenever I wiggled the cord. Tried cutting the cord back thinking that some wiring was bad, but that only worked for a week until the problem...

    What made you start detailing?

    Wet sanding

For tough water spots, I would first try a Dual Action Polisher or something similar with an orange pad and some cleaner wax first... then work your way into something more aggressive if that doesn't work. If you're thinking of wet sanding and have never done it, the auto junk yard is a great...

    Detailing bathroom

I detail the interior of RVs every now and again. I use Meguiars M100 Pro Speed Compound with an orange pad (flex) to remove soap scum and finish up with Pro Polish (this include the shower doors). I use Buff Magic on all the shiny stuff.

La totally awesome as tire cleaner?

I use this stuff all the time, in fact it's the only thing I use on the wheels. As mentioned, wet the wheels first, spray on (out of direct sunlight) and rinse off immediately and rinse thoroughly.
