I love sea sponges for washing. They hold a ton of water/soap are gentle on the paint, rinse clean. I recently started using a BHB which I also like because it's even easier to rinse clean and has a wider wash path so the wash takes less time.

It sounds like the FK system. If so, go to their website. They have a flow chart detailing the entire process.

No need to remove it before polishing. The polishing process will remove what's there. Have you clayed recently? If not, maybe do so before polishing.

As long as it's brittle or cracking, probably a good vinyl cleaner followed by a protectant would get it looking much better and prevent further degradation if regularly applied. Not so sure it will soften it that much though. For cleaning vinyl I've had good results with vinyl/interior...

I keep mine in my garage year round - no a/c or heater. Never had anything go bad with them.

I've never tried the 303 convertible top protectant, but usually their stuff is pretty good. RaggTopp is what I use when treating convertibles. I've always had great results with it.

I generally don't use paint cleaners. Seems like a redundant step after using a good finish polish. Perhaps if the car were already virtually swirl-free I'd use one, but they never are. :(
