From the looks of the photos, it appears that the coating/color on the leather had worn off in the spot, and that you have rubbed off even more of it in the attempt to clean it. If this is the case- it will require refinishing.
To ad note: My grandfather was in the Air Force during the Korean War and was in a C-24 (I believe it was a carrier variant of the B-24) that was shot down over the Pacific- he was the only survivor.
