What to expect with boat gel coat?

Often what can happen in gelcoat, is that the pigments fade before the polyester/resins breakdown. So you may to have to cut a little deeper in to the fresh polyester/resin in order to bring back a consistant color. We see this more in the white and pastel pigmant gelcoats.

What to expect with boat gel coat?

Hi Primo, I was just wondering if there is a differance in mold (tooling)gelcoats and final product gelcoats?

What to expect with boat gel coat?

Generally I don't expect to see orange peel effect in gelcoat. The reason is, how the boats are made in a mold. You could have some orange peel effects if you have a painted hull or graphics, but you don't. As far as DG products, I'm not real familiar with thier products to give any meaningful...

    Gelcoat is boring

We never have problems with holograms in marine gelcoat. I would like to believe all gelcoat is the same, but it's not. We find that since boat builders use differant maufactures of polyester/resins/pigmants, they also finish out a little differant. A Bayliner boat will need less agression...

    which DA machine?

You ask alot of good and important questions that deserve some sort of answer. But I can't give you all the absolute answers. Heres why: I don't know how your vessal is stored , I don't know what part of the country your vessal is in, how often you use the vessal and the people traffic...

    which DA machine?

If you promise to diligently maintain your new vessal, a Porter Cable 7424xp is all you will need. Don't forget to use your favorite spray wax every time you shampo.

    Gelcoat is boring

None, if I was compounding with Buff Magic (Pink) or 3M Imperial Compound. My sons love PoorBoys SSR 2.5 polish for the vessals that need more than an abrasive AIO but less than a compound. I know this may seem harsh if you come from the clearcoat world, but it's not in the modern gelcoat...

    Gelcoat is boring

Hi Mike : Another thing a guy can do for real chalky gelcoat, is prep the surface. Something like a Sia 6120 Siavlies Ultra Fine Nonwoven disc cleans up the clutter of dead gelcoat prior to compounding. It is an extra step, but its quick and allows the compounds and wool pads to perform...

    Gelcoat is boring

How much can you say about it? Grab your rotory and a wool pad and you'll get a factory shine. A circus monkey can do it. I just don't know what to say to offer quality information.

Anyone with experience using 3M Cleaner & Wax?

We have tried XMT360, and its a great sun friendy and easy to work with product for gelcoat....but it's a AIO cleaner. It works great for stuborn water spots and some surface scuffs and contaminats, but not for gel coat oxidation if you can see it with your eye. It'a a cleaner

Thinking of skipping Buff Magic and wetsanding?

Hi freedre, I was refurring to a wool pad. If you are used to the auto world of clearcoats, a wool pad is not the pad of choice for polishing a surface. In the gelcoat world, you can actually polish down the surface to a show room surface with a wool pad, right compound and some surface...

    Boats...waxing in the sun...

Living in SW Florida, my first cryteria in researching new products for my sons marine detailing business is , SUN FRIENLDY. As you stated working in a controled enviorment is not an option, usually, for a marine detailer. A few waxes we use or have used are the Collinites...

Thinking of skipping Buff Magic and wetsanding?

Autogeek carries both the pink and white by ShurHold. They are great paste(dry) compounds, if you prefur a wet compound, the 3M Imperial Compound will give you pretty much the same results. I believe they are DAT so they actually polish out well on gelcoat even with wool.

Thinking of skipping Buff Magic and wetsanding?

That's a manufactures quality control issue with the mold. What boat manufacture was that?

Boat & RV Detailing Newsletter & How-To Guides

Nick: I really appreciate the fact that PBMG is trying to promote a forum that has an honest exchange of quality information for detailing in the marine industry. None of the current boating forums have been able to achieve a level professional discussions and detail as to match your car care...

    cleaner wax on gel coat????

Since there is not a mechanical or mathematical way to measure the degree of oxidized resin/polyesters/pigments in gelcoats. A good "kiss" rule method of mesurement for a marine detailer is : If you can see oxidation with your naked eye on gelcoat, don't grab your AIO, no matter what the...

    cleaner wax on gel coat????

"Meguiar’s #50 Marine/RV Cleaner Wax is a one-step cleaner and protectant for the gel coat that will cut down your maintenance time so you can spend more time where you really want to be – on the water!" 2 years of neglect isn't miantenance. Wrong product for this thread. I'll try it , but...
