From my perspective, the idea of the grit guard is to let the dirt, grit and contaminants settle to the bottom of the bucket. The veins keep the water below the grill from agitating so that dirt does not swirl back up and re-attach to the wash mitt. I can't see how dirt can settle to the bottom...
