70 hour restorative detail on my '02 Z06 - Immaculate Reflections

Did you fix the chips? Did you take any pics of the before/after of those repairs? I'm curious as I'm scheduling some time to work on my X5 and it has rock chips all over the front of the hood. To boot - they're all filled with polish so they look white. I need to clean 'em up bad. Also...

    Wet-sanded through OEM clearcoat

Ok, so the vehicle is back from the airport and had a chance to snap some pictures. I've identified something I noticed using black tick marks. The change in shade during the sanding process was the first clue I went to far. Now I'm waiting for my bottle/brush and aeresol-type clear coat. I...

Wheel Brightener - how to work with toxic chemicals safely...

Based off of a recommendation by my BMW dealer, the stuff works well at cleaning factory rims. Now while I like the idea of not running out of wheel cleaner for the summer, and that my rims would look great, I believe this label is describing a situation for health concern when using it. My...

    She reached her limit!!

Bummer man. I'm sure most of us married guys can attest that it's a matter of perception: To you, it's a box of goodies for a hobby you enjoy. To her, it's something she probably cares little about, and sees it as a threat - something in that box is making you more excited that her perhaps...

    Wet-sanded through OEM clearcoat

Here are some pics of the sanding job BEFORE I went through the clear. After I took these shots, (hands still shaking from this being my 1st sanding experience) I grabbed my PC 7424 XP, prepped my 5.5" LC yellow foam with WF TSR 3.0 and hit the area with an OPM of 5. I was impressed with that...

    Wet-sanded through OEM clearcoat

Lesson learned. The big take away is that when repairing key scratches, I need to focus on keeping the touch up paint as flat to the existing surface as possible. I put a bit too much on and turned out to be a little "higher" than the surrounding paint. So naturally sanding that high area down...

    Wet-sanded through OEM clearcoat

Thanks Mike - I've talked to the support staff at the company selling the clear. They gave me direction on prep: Dawn wash, light 1500 sand for adhesion, NOT to tape off so to avoid seeing tape lines, but to fold some paper or other barrier and tape that, spray, dry, sand (optional), buff w/...

    Wet-sanded through OEM clearcoat

Thanks Mike - i will add up all my pics shortly to show the story... For attempting the clear coat repair - IYO, is aeresol going to apply better than brush application? Would you suggest applying a coat of basecoat before the clear to be safe? Well, as safe as someone trying to fix burning...

    Wet-sanded through OEM clearcoat

This is an offshoot of another thread I posted where I had prepped one of my cars for a key scratch so to wet sand and buffing. Yesterday, I decided to take the project to the next step by wetsanding the touched up area. I started with 2000 grit paper. I didn't count the strokes, but was...

    touch up paint first?

Between the above link, and Mike's post here, http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/wet-sanding-cutting-buffing/21463-removing-orange-peel-sanding-marks-griot-s-rop-wolfgang-twins.html I should be good to go. Two questions: I have a yellow pad and surbuff 5.5 pads. Which would be more...

    touch up paint first?

Yes I can catch a nail, but it looks like it can be done. See this: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/show-n-shine/43535-key-repair-step-step-procedure.html

    touch up paint first?

Looking to wet-sand this key scratch this weekend to rid the car of the scratch below. Car is washed and clayed. I'm ready to wet sand and have purchased the Megs finishing paper in 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 grit paper. Should I start with the 1500 or be less-aggressive? Also, I have touch...

Need some help - looking to graduate from the PC 7424XP to a rotary buffer.

First off Mike I have to give you props ---->:urtheman: I've read through those posts and while they certainly help explain the point about going hologram-free with a rotary, I'm not finding information about the basic techniques behind using a rotary such as the Flex PE14. I've watched...

Need some help - looking to graduate from the PC 7424XP to a rotary buffer.

Nope. No junkers to play with. I am going to be wetsanding a small portion of my wife's minivan door to fix this scratch. This was another reason to get the Flex PE 14 - to get the sanding marks out quickly. I did however see Mike post a demonstration on how a DA orbital, WF TSR and yellow pad...
