The 8 normal steps to perform before buffing out a car

Question: regarding steps 7 & 8, at what point do you treat those surfaces, such as treating black plastic trim pieces with something like Back to Black? I find that when I am applying those kinds of dressings, I always end up getting a little bit on the paint.. I am never sure if I should do...

    New guy, feeling discouraged

Well today I received a 'care package' from another forum member. This person was extremely generous and sent me some random products including M105, spray detailer, PB polish, and some really nice MF towels, amongst other things. I couldn't believe the generosity of a stranger! I offered...

How to tape-off a car before machine polishing

It's hard to tell on my phone, but are you taping over the joints in the body panels, or just on either side of the joint, overlapping onto the top side of the panel just a bit? Is this to prevent burning through the paint on the edges of panels, or to keep product from getting into those joints?

For the pads, I'd probably go with 3-4 to be on the safe side. Seeing as how I'm just starting out, I think it would be difficult for me to manage only 1 or 2 pads, I'd have to know when they need to be cleaned and how to do so, and I just don't have that knowledge or experience yet. The...

The paint on the BMW really isn't too bad, just a few water spots and minor swirls... I'm not sure if the paint is hard or soft? I'm assuming a softer paint would polish more easily?

Thanks for this! I think my estimation of getting the car polished might have been a bit low. I had only asked one friend who does detailing, and he said around 100-150 for the car, looking back on it that does sound a bit low. So really this stuff will pay for itself in about 2 polishes...

Hey thanks! I love the color, Avus Blue, it's what sold it for me. I don't spare much expense on it, that's for sure! Just another reason Im hesitant about this purchase, I'm just thinking of long parts list I already have!

I hadn't even considered a 3" pad! The number of pads is a bit of an unknown to me, as I have absolutely zero polishing experience. Some are saying 12 and some are saying 2-4... I'd probably end up in the middle maybe get a set of 9? Orange, white, and black are the way to go? So 3 of...

Thanks for all the replies! I am only looking to do my own cars, maybe family later on. As for supplies, I do already have a good car wash, wax, and a fair supply of MF towels, albeit not the best quality. I hadn't considered a kit. Mostly because I thought the most expensive part of...

Hello all, I've been browsing this forum for a few months now, reading the AG articles and Mike's how to's. I have been learning a lot already, and have improved my detailing skill immensely over the past few months. I can hardly believe there was a time that I didn't dry my car after a wash...
