I have done them with wool pads but if they are really bad I would wet sand with 1500,2000 grit (I think) and then compound with a wool pad pretty much, just make sure you don't let it get too hot.

The first two are from Malco, the soft yellow one and second to last white one are the ones that came with my makita ( havnt been used yet). By what I read so far pretty much the yellow ones that I have are for polishing. But that last one feels totally different from the rest almost like fabric...
