    Headlight Restoration-new UV sealant idea

I try to go 60/40.....but if its windy out, the 60/40 dries too quickly and doesn't have a chance to self-level, so I have to add mineral spirits to thin the mixture out a bit to work. I've tried 70/30 and it didn't work for me....even the 60/40 is kind of pushing it. Also....many on here DON"T...

I agree.........You have to wipe on the spar mixture very quickly. As I've mentioned in previous posts, I work mostly outside and wind is my biggest threat. If its windy out, the spar I just applied will dry too quickly...not allowing the proper time for it to self-level and it leaves streaks. I...

60 spar.....40 spirits.............that way you have a little thicker coat of spar. I find if its a large headlight lens, or if its windy outside, you gotta be careful and real fast with application or it'll leave streaks and not self-level very well. Ya gotta experiment.

That looks like a Nissan ......those headlamp lenses seem to go bad quickly from the factory,(along with others like Sonata's) and they also seem to have the spar mixture go bad quickly too. I don't know why, just that it does. Maybe the shape? Angle? Who knows? Try a 60/40 mixture.

I wish that would work to remove the old OEM coating on Chevy's for example. I don't have any issues removing the spar, its the 1/2 of OEM coating that isn't deteriorated thats hard to remove for me. The top half is usually worn off and comes off easy with very little sanding. The bottom half ya...

I use the mineral spirits to clean off if I mess up putting on the spar also. It comes right off when its still wet and as long as it hasn't dried for a half hour or so, your ok.

I use the mineral spirits for the 50/50 mix with the spar....and....to wipe the lens clean from sanding, prior to applying the spar mixture...and it works great. No reason to buy rubbing alcohol too. The problems that I hear from others on here about using an air brush to spray is.....1. The...

With vehicles like that....all you can do is tell the customer that there is no guarantee. With many of them, the lights end up being about 80% better than they were....thats the best you can do. I've been getting some lately that show no visable signs of cracks and yet while sanding them, there...

Headlight sealant: spar urethane vs. opti coat 2.0

I, for one, do use a 3M Trizact foam 3" disc 3000 grit for my final sand before spar.

Headlight sealant: spar urethane vs. opti coat 2.0

I think the drying time can vary depending on the atmosphere......temp, humidity...ect. I try to get my customers to let it dry out in the sun for at least a few hours......if they can leave it overnight in their garage or not drive it till the next day is best. Many though will pick the car...

Headlight sealant: spar urethane vs. opti coat 2.0

This method was discussed in one of these threads and most people agreed that the extra time involved to prevent overspray exceeded the advantage of using that method.....especially when you can just wipe on the spar with a few quick swipes and your done.

Headlight sealant: spar urethane vs. opti coat 2.0

I've run across several makes and models that develop small cracks which can't be removed......but normally you can highly improve the clarity of the lens. This visually looks better, plus allows more light to shine through onto the road. Thats really what its all about. It is what it is.....and...

Yeah, I don't think you can ever make a restored light loo exactly like a brand new one......but we can get em' dang close to it....lol

I personally wouldn't use wax after the spar has cured. I've done that and I believe it is the wax that then turns yellow. I would just clean them with a car wash. I'm not sure but I'm afraid harsh cleaners or solvents would quickly remove the cured spar. Just my thoughts.

I use 1/4 sheet of sand paper between two headlight of each grit... 800 1000 1500 then 3M trizact 3000 foam disc Then wipe with spirits and apply spar. Several on here will argue that compound and polish is too smooth....not leaving anything for the spar to "bite into". That is why I don't...

Honestly, for most of the headlights I do, I use a Wendy's frosty spoon......use 3 spoons of spar.....and two spoons of spirits. It's not exact but I think you just kind of get a "feel" for it after you do a number of them. Use what works for you. If one ounce works for you......do it. I use...

Where is Doha located? There was a guy in here from, I think, Puerto Rico who couldn't find the right stuff either.

I've often thought about putting a second coating but was told by others that the mineral spirits in the second mixture could melt away some of the original coating causing streaks and blurrying. It's nice to know that second coatings might work. Lou, have you tried taping off one headlamp...

Plus, the suggested Spar also has some UV protectant capabilities that some others may not have.

I just did a lexus SUV 2 weeks ago and I see it almost every day. I haven't noticed any discoloration at all. I'm not sure about yours.
