    Headlight Restoration-new UV sealant idea

I've also heard of people pre-mixing it with success. All I know is that I mixed it in a mason jar(dunno how much tighter seal you can get than that) and it turned dark colored after about a month. Since that time, I only mix it when I need it.

Ahh.......yes, compound will do that. Glad you found the solution. There's nothing worse than not knowing why something didn't work as expected. Keep up the good work....it shows that ya care.

Headlight sealant: spar urethane vs. opti coat 2.0

Hotrod.....very cool...can't wait to see some pics. I've been contemplating switching to the Opti-coat. We have had some hot temps here in Daytona Beach, Florida as well. Where are your record triple digit temps?

Headlight sealant: spar urethane vs. opti coat 2.0

It HAS TO BE the Helmsman Spar clear gloss......that is the one with green in the label (see photo on the first post of this thread) That one has the UV protection which is the main reason for its desired use with this application. Glad that you didn't just pick one at random. Here in Florida...

Headlight sealant: spar urethane vs. opti coat 2.0

Reggie......Did you use any compound or polish after sanding? Also, did you wipe the lens clean with mineral spirits and let it dry before wiping on the spar mixture? Those are the only two things I can think of to cause that to happen, unless someone tried vandalizing the customers car by...

So, if the Opti-cote doesn't require any mixing........Is it hard to prevent streaking? or is it very thin so it will self-level?

I read in another forum that people were using the 1K alone on the headlights. They did mention that the 2K was available and that they sometimes used that but that once mixed, the rest of the can needed to be sprayed within 24 hours or it would harden. I don't do headlights for a...

I've asked people who have used it in the past but......How hard is the Opti-coat to apply? I read the instructions another forum member displayed and the process looked quite lengthy and sorta complicated to me. I've also ordered a can of the 1K spray. How does that compare?

Headlight sealant: spar urethane vs. opti coat 2.0

Mr. Fusion...... Is it just me, or does it seem like different makes/models have harder or softer composite material in their headlamp lenses? I'm wondering if thats why some are harder or easier to sand? Example....it seems like the Honda's and Chrysler's sand real easy and don't leave a bunch...

    Headlight restoration 50/50.

Does anyone feel like maybe the different car makes/models may have different variations of hardness/softness to their headlamp lens composite materials? It sure seems like some are harder or easier than others to remove sanding marks/swirls. Anyone?

    Headlight restoration 50/50.

Just click this thread to the first page. I do basically the same process as 93fox. All by hand wet sanding. Only thing I do different is I use a 3m 3000 grit Trizact pad and drill before the spar/mineral spirits mix.

I've never used the spray cans before.....the spar/spirits is far less expensive and easier in my book.

    Headlight restoration 50/50.

I don't think you need to start out as low as 500.....but if you must, I think you'd need more steps in between to really clear them up. Try 500, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000...? Lately, I've been hand wet sanding all mine...starting with 800, then 1000, next 1200, then 1500 and finally using a 3M 3000...
