What grit would you recommend to start with, and what's the coarsest grit you would use? It appears the Mirka Abralon goes from 180-3000.

I just didn't think it would do much.

It's cold and rainy (40's), and I wanted to ask - Is there any concern to this? Obviously not IN the rain, but in the open garage just a few feet away from pouring rain, so obviously 100% humidity.

I love mine. Been using, and will use, for years. I also watch the staff at the Factory Auto Shows and museums use these on million dollar cars, with no issues. It makes me feel better that they work just fine.

I'm a concrete floor polisher, and I can tell you that you can use a rotary with a stone polishing pad to clean up the granite to brand new. I'm not familiar with a Makita EU5000, but I can point you in a direction for grit if I had a little more information.

Very cool car, and very cool project. It's nice to see the products you used, regardless of opinion, to see what it would do to a decades-old neglected paint. I'm a big fan of "patina", and I would be happiest with it with however good you got it (without repainting, that is).

I didn't realize the BMW BSM paint was so hard. I tried the DA with Terry cloth and M105, and it looks a ton better, but still a lot of spider webs and RIDS. I also don't think I was using the product correctly - I think I worked too much area. Can someone explain how long your supposed to work...

Thanks guys. I tried a rotary with compound, and it just hologrammed the hell out of it. Mainly because I probably just suck. I'm going to keep at it, as I would like to learn, and it will be gratifying if I get it right. When you say a proper machine polish, which product are you referring to...

I'd love to clean up my mess of an M5. I've tried M105/205 by hand, but that didn't seem to do much. I'm going to try DA with terry cloth However, once I get these terrible swirls out, I'm looking to get the metallic to pop. What I'm thinking is Poorboys Black hole, then Midnight Sun over it...
