I don't think it would be enough to clean the applicator as you described. It probably needs to soak in a cleaning solution for awhile to make sure whatever product is embedded in it is broken down before rinsing it out to dry.

I need to (or want to) revisit Rain X and Aquapel. I've used both in the past. Of the two, I've had better experience with Aquapel (didn't it have a different name before?). In the last year, I have tried Gtechniq, both G1 and G5. Honestly, I don't think either works any better than the cheaper...

I've never heard of anyone removing tar with chrome polish. Tar remover, WD40, gasoline, etc., but not chrome polish. I had some tar on the barrels of my (non chrome) wheels. There were hard enough that I could rip through a nail if I tried to scrape them off. I used Goof Off; it took a lot of...

Nothing wrong with using a slightly damp pad. A little moisture can actually help sometimes, letting the polish work longer without drying out or dusting. You will even see some guys spray a new pad with a light mist of liquid (water, pad conditioner, quick detailer, etc.) before adding polish.

Maybe it's tar? In which case you would use a tar remover.

The next course of action would be to continue doing the test spot with the Ultimate Polish, but with the more aggressive orange pad. If that combination doesn't take care of the swirls, then bump up to the compound and orange pad. Just be sure that when you start with the polish and white pad...
