You can also use the old " tried and trued " method of putting a zip lock bag over your hand and feeling the paint. If it is rough and gritty feeling, you definately should clay the vehicle

Is there a general guideline as to which car manufactures tend to have softer or harder paints?

With a clear coat, you wont see any of the color of the paint on your pad when polishing
