I would tend to use an oil that does not affect the material of the backing plate which I believe is plastic. I'll be using a silicone based oil if I decide to oil the felt ring.

Its why I suggested it....a need for a top quality 3" DA. It has to be quality, compact and made in Germany like the Flex. My charge card is ready and hopefully they'll have one within a year.

I would always want a buffer zone around my backing plate, so that is the only way I would go if I used a 4" backing plate. And ultimately, I would prefer that Flex produces a 3" version of their XC 3401 VRG that I have, in a smaller overall size. I really would like a quality 3" DA polisher...

Yeah but who pays for shipping both ways for failures while under their lifetime warranty? I'd like a 3" polisher, but I want one that will be around in ten years like the rest of my shop equipment.
