    Pad size for rotory

If the size and weight are okay for you, the machine will NOT disappoint. That is a crazy deal... I'd be all over it. Is the car in your avatar yours? I admire it every time I see it. :xyxthumbs:

    Pad size for rotory

Not trying to answer for Smack since your question was directed at him, but I'll throw my 2 cents in. The 7" BP that comes with it is nice but mostly good for wool. Only 6" of it has velcro so what I did was trim the foam off around the edge that did not have velcro. Then I spun it on the tool...

Just bought a New Hitachi SP18VA buffer

Funny you say that. I find my 849x better in every way compared to the PE-14 EXCEPT size/weight. The speed dial on the flex feels cheap, the trigger feels cheap and you have to have your finger centered on the trigger or it catches, the electronic speed control fluctuates, I can bog it more...

    Pad size for rotory

I love it. Sometimes on certain paints the 5.5 flats seem a little bit too thin/stiff even with a flex backing plate. For me the hybrids just work better always. For 5~6" foams: I like 5" hybrids the best, followed by CG Hex 5.5" and finally LC Flat 5.5" For 3~4" foams: I like 4" CG self...

    Pad size for rotory

4" LC BP (3 3/4 actually I think) and a 5" hybrid pad feels really nice on both my 849x and PE14.

    pad selection again

Agreed. The velcro from the BP will start digging into the foam and chew it up.

1987 Corvette Show Car Makeover - SONAX Showcase

Mike, the only gold pads I'm finding on AG are 6.5 CCS pads and looking at the photos it doesn't seem right? Do you have a link the the gold pads you used. Sorry if you already posted it, I couldn't find it. Thanks

If you were going to use products from only one company

Like others, I'd also pick Optimum or Meguiars. If you twisted my arm to pick ONLY one then probably Meguiars.

3" or 4" Backing Plate-What is More Practical?

Yeah and in all honesty the only reason I tried 'em was because I seen Mike P using them on a rotary for his "surgical buffing". Which is why I got them for my rotary, but have tried them on the PC too. I agree on the B&S quality and love their 3" pads although I find myself using the 4" Hex...

3" or 4" Backing Plate-What is More Practical?

I think he means the Griots pads which I do agree they aren't that strong. I've tried them. 3" LC Hydros are okay, 3" Griots pads are thinner and seem not to last as long. For me when I'm not using the 4" Hex Logics, I'm using the 3" buff and shine pads... yellow polishing and black...

3" or 4" Backing Plate-What is More Practical?

Yep 3" LC Hydros fit and Griot's 3" pads work great as well.

3" or 4" Backing Plate-What is More Practical?

Although I've never actually tested them side by side (IE 50/50), I'd say the aggressiveness is about the same comparing the same color of each. They do feel different touching them with my hand, but on the paint it's very similar. For me they last a long time too. I wish AG carried these!!

3" or 4" Backing Plate-What is More Practical?

I don't. I've seen others change to a different weight, but I've always just used what it came with. I wouldn't advise removing it completely.

3" or 4" Backing Plate-What is More Practical?

CG Hex Logic self centering 4" with LC 3" BP... Don't mind the crappy iPad photos.

3" or 4" Backing Plate-What is More Practical?

Just seen this... was this a suggestion to the OP or asking me? :) This is indeed a pain. I've dedicated my PC to small pads with the 3" BP and use the 3401 for bigger pads. The Harbor Freight DA could be had for around $50 and just dedicate one to smaller pads and the other for bigger.

3" or 4" Backing Plate-What is More Practical?

It works great! I use self centering CG Hex Logic 4" pads with a 3" LC BP. I can snap some photos when I get home for anyone who wants to see this combo.

I think I ate through the paint!!

Burning the paint [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mIDs_m8WRA]Paint Burning - YouTube[/video] It would be near impossible to burn such a large area such as what the OP posted with a DA. He simply removed too much material whether it was from improper use or there was a problem with a paint...

I think I ate through the paint!!

Props for knowing the difference between striking through the clear/paint and actually burning the clear/paint. It's really hard to tell, but I'd say the clear was *possibly* already failing, which as others have mentioned, older Hondas/Acuras are known for. You don't have any before photos of...
