My car has a textured plastic lower side sill ‘blade’. Obviously if I’m polishing out the paint I would tape it off so as not to stain the plastic. Your FrankenDetailer solution is intriguing, I just worry that the bit of KSG would stain that part of my car.

There's nothing wrong with what you want to do here. You will get the benefits of protection and a little shine but obviously it won't look its best without the correction/polishing. As long as you know that, then go for it.
No issues with streaking at that ratio?
One of the first sins that I committed many years ago when using Optimum No-rinse was using too much product. At the time I just wouldn't believe that it could work at such high dilution ratios and it streaked pretty badly.

It’s a good idea and when I get a chance to try it I’ll post up.
I've been looking into this myself. I'm in San Antonio TX and my water is about 275ppm. The DI resin systems don't work well for the reasons that have already been mentioned. I would either go with a water softener or if you're set on a spotless rinse system, you could look at this: 35 GPD Spot...
Excellent job sir. That car cleaned up very well despite all those years of neglect, a testament to your skill. Good luck on the next phase of things too! I've enjoyed all of your posts over the years.
