Nice turnaround Richy!! Reminds me of the first Corvette I polished. It too was a 69 but in original Monza red paint. It was super soft single stage and real easy to work with to bring back a nice shine. You do what you can with those old damaged lacquer paint jobs.

Any hardware store should have water filters with garden hose threads on each end. Rusroleum makes a wax and grease remover that could work if available. I only use it to pre-clean before sanding and painting. I get it at WalMart.

How do you feel about the finish on your GTO? sounds like you might do a little testing starting with something not very aggressive. Maybe a machine applied coat of #7 with a polish pad to see how it shines the paint up.?..
