    Polisher for beginner

I'd jump right into the Flex 3401 if you have the money to do so. If I had it all to do over that's what I would do. I've trained many newbies to run the 3401 and even the ones with very little common sense were able to easily pick it up and get great results. There's less of a learning curve...

    nEW TO CLAY

Drop the show car glaze from your plan. It won't add anything but extra work to the job. It's more for single stage paint.

    Newbie Polishing/Machine Finishing Questions

Sure thing man!! With the abrasive technology and the technology, R&D put into the dual action polishers out today and the internet forums for detailing / polishing automotive paint, once you get really good with a DA polisher there isn't much need for the rotary polishers any more if you're...

    Hazy and dull

I do a lot of these types of repairs and I don't skimp on the clear or the base coat. I apply coats just heavy enough that they don't sag or run...Well I try to anyways. I'd rather sand off a run or a sag in the clear than to not have enough material to work with. I've sanded off lots of runs...

    Hazy and dull

1000 grit is a pretty stout grit for 4 thin coats of rattle can clear. Could it be that you sanded back through the clear into the base coat? It looks like that could be the issue. I couldn't tell by the gallery uploaded photo so I saved a copy and enlarged it in windows photo viewer. What...

    RIDS and options

I've applied clear to some rids and then buffed over them without sanding. In some lower panel areas I couldn't really notice the repairs without a bright light to search for them. Some rids (deep enough) could be the beginning of a rust situation and should be protected with a coat of something...

    RIDS and options

I've found these applicators to work best to apply clear for scratch repair for deeper rids. They can be found at most auto body supply stores or at Eastwood.

    Hazy and dull

Very nice post!! :urtheman: To the OP I'd try refining your wet sanding to have a smoother surface on which to work on. Work it down to 3000 grit until all is smooth and dull looking. If you're still seeing pits or pockets of shiny clear coat then you haven't quite removed all the orange peel...

    Newbie Polishing/Machine Finishing Questions

Welcome to the site. I wouldn't be concerned on the hood around the headlights on that Benz because those lines are very curvaceous, not anywhere near being sharp lines. If using a rotary polisher (and I did read and understand your post) I'd go a little slower in those areas. At worst a PC or...

help with pads....maybe a stupid question but...

If I were to do this (and I have) I'd lay my backing plate fairly centered on the velcro of the pad. With backing plate attached to the pad but off of the polisher, I'd use a thick tipped magic marker to draw a thick line on the pad's velcro around the edge of the backing plate, then remove the...

5 1/2" pads with stock backing plate?

I like the stock Flex 3401 5.5" backing plate better with LC 5.5" pads. I have, and have tried the 4 3/8" backing plate but just don't like all the extra pad hanging over the edge. I've never bought those tapered pads that fit exact on the 4 3/8" plate though. I've been using LC flat 5.5" pads...

    Pinstriping removal

Sounds like "they" painted them on over a fresh coat of wax and the paint didn't adhere properly. Good thing I suppose, for the removal process anyway.

LC 6" Orange flat pad collapsed.

:iagree: Great post Tony. I'll add that (as like many of us) in the early days of learning how to compound and polish paint, I found that I had a tendency to use way too much product. The "less is more" rule of thumb came pretty slowly for me. The better I got at using less product, the fewer...

Help!! Yellow haze settling on my ride.

I just turned around an 06 Chevy uplander that was dried with DG Aqua Wax last time it was washed. It was covered in road scum and I went to pressure wash the grit off of it and to my surprise it rinsed as clean as new without even touching it. DG AW is the answer to your horrid yellow dilemma.

Help!! Yellow haze settling on my ride.

Got a chuckle out of that for sure!! At least until my rental vans start turning yellow...oh wait...more washing means more money for me. I just call these handicap accessible rental vans mine because I repair and maintenance them.
