Yes. It must be wet. I don't consider it wet until the urethane liquid has soaked THROUGH the folded paper towel and the backside is wet. An ample amount of the stuff also makes for better self-leveling, short of the point where it runs. A saturated paper towel pad seems to do that, just...

    Headlight Restoration-new UV sealant idea

If it's a warmish day and the sun is out, generally it is. But the same people who are in a big hurry to go will often be the ones who will pull over and stop after they turn the first corner, then mash their fingers into the headlights, leaving fingerprints. The urethane will not be totally...

I have been wet-sanding prior to that, probably starting at 600. Every minute or so I dip the paper into a bucket of water to keep it wet. I don't know for sure that the results are better, but I THINK I can better "feel" the surface and the paper doesn't clog as much; so I use less paper...

    Headlight Restoration-new UV sealant idea

I have not dropped in for a while, thought I'd give an update on my own car and its headlights, which had been restored and coated with Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane. After almost two years of outside exposure, some weathering was visible. It appeared that the urethane coat had worn thin, or...

It could be that the rules in the Los Angeles Basin are more strict as to VOCs, than in the Bay Area and Sacramento Air Quality districts.

Where in California? Here in Sonoma County, I was able to find the solvent-based Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane in a quart can, at Home Depot...but not at Lowe's.

Even the water-based product says "Indoor/Outdoor." Doesn't mean it's just as durable, though.

You don't say in your profile where you are located. It is possible that local air quality regulations do not allow sale of the solvent-based product due to its level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). I can't get some automotive paints where I live, for that reason. Twenty miles away is...

    Headlight Restoration-new UV sealant idea

It doesn't take that long to tape around the lights. Besides, on a car like the Camry in the photo, you don't have to mask the hood, only open it, put a big rag or some paper in there and close the hood, then wrap around the hood edge! Takes about 15 seconds, and half the masking is done.

Possibly...I am not sure...the VOC content of the non-aerosol version is too high in certain areas due to air pollution regulations? If you have the aerosol, can you spray it to saturate a blue paper towel and spread it that way?

    Headlight Restoration-new UV sealant idea

It sure would. I had feared that I'd have to sand it all off but the denatured alcohol mixed with elbow grease worked just fine. It took a few applications and a final one to remove a slight, patchy leftover "haze", then I polished the headlight again with Plast-X, just in case, even though...

    Headlight Restoration-new UV sealant idea

The Helmsman Spar Urethane has worked flawlessly for me. This is only on my own cars, a 1994 Ford Taurus whose original UV protection coat had worn off a long time and many polishings ago, and a 2002 Ford Taurus on which the upper part of the headlight had its UV protection worn off, but not...
