    Black paint over spray headache....

Hello Mike and forum, I took my 64 Galaxie to have the front suspension re-built and the mechanic did a great job and even went above and beyond expectation. He was nice enough to paint the upper and lower arms and many other things under the car. BUT, unfortunately the rattle can over spray...

Tape marks left in paint after buffing test spot......

Thanks for posting that Mike, I was really sweating there for a while when I saw the tape line..... I have never had trouble before when taping off areas working on my other vehicles, or on recently painted cars. I have buffed over tape lines in the past, but I've never had tape actually leave...

Tape marks left in paint after buffing test spot......

As beginner, I would buff over the tape and as you said , heat the glue up or roll the tape up a bit with the buffer. After buffing , I would have little spots of tape residue sticking to the cars finish, and that is hard to get off also......Live and learn ! Thanks for the tape info Vobro !

Tape marks left in paint after buffing test spot......

I had my 64 Galaxie repainted about a year ago and I haven't sealed the paint just yet. I have a dark metallic blue paint job and there were some light holograms left on the car from the body shop. I wanted rid of the holograms ,so I taped off a test spot just like Mike taught us, buffed the...

Need advice on single stage paint buffing project

Thanks for the reply fellas ! Thankfully the paint is not a metallic color so it will be interesting to see how much of the oxidation comes off on the towels. I'll post pics when we start the project.

Need advice on single stage paint buffing project

I have a friend who wants his 73 Mustang buffed and the car was repainted some time ago. The color now is Candy Apple Red,but the trunk and hood are so faded that they look orange. I did a test spot with my 3401,Menz 400, and a LC 6" wool pad and wow did it wipe away the scratches and dead...

Fellow detailers...what is your favorite part and least favorite part of the detail?

Interior windows, and cleaning foam pads for me.. Best part is standing back and admiring a great job, with the thought in the back of your head,"I think I can still get a better shine than that!".

DIY 1 and 2 inch foam pads

I did not try the hammer method, but I'll give it a whirl ! As far as the angle for compression,I really don't see a way to cut the pad using the pipe method...I did try to cut an angle on the small pad using my meat slicer by rolling it with the blade, but it just doesn't do a smooth job,Lol

DIY 1 and 2 inch foam pads

Well, I found a piece of 1 3/4", thin wall pipe and sharpened the outside edge, then I took a small belt grinder and ground off a little on the inside. Now I have a sharp ,round circle to cut with, and BTW, it helps if the edge on the pipe is just a little rough. It seems to cut better with a...

DIY 1 and 2 inch foam pads

That is exactly what I came up with. I have some thinner conduit that I will try this out on. My guess would be ,what ever you cut the pad with has to cut relatively smooth so you don't "rip" the pad. Getting a taper to the pad might be a little tougher though....More to come.

DIY 1 and 2 inch foam pads

Here is another pic of the job done. The scuffed side was done with 3000 grit paper. I made 6 section passes with the Flex PE8 on speed 2 setting. For a crudely circle it did a swirl free job. Now to find a way to cut perfect circles,THEN, cut the face of the pad down evenly.......I love a...

DIY 1 and 2 inch foam pads

Looking at the price of Flex 1 and 2 inch foam pads,I was wondering if anyone out there has ever cut down one of their pads,(ie. LC CCS pad) and made their own small pads to do intricate work ? With a 1 inch pad being almost as expensive as a 6 inch pad,I thought it would be worth a try. I cut a...

You just can't beat the Flex 3401...

I started detailing a few years ago when I received a poor paint job on my classic car. I joined this forum ,took some good advice, bought everything I needed to wet sand, buff, polish, etc. I bought a PC 7424,and the Flex 3401 and went to work. When it came to polishing I tried to use the PC,but I...

    Another new paint job question

I have a new paint job on my car ,color is dark blue, the paint is about 4 months old. The shop did a great job but if you look at the car in the sun, there are very very light swirls and some holograms that almost look 3-D ish. I have Menz. products on hand,( 400,1500,2500,4000) also Wolfgang...

How many people are interested in learning how to wet sand?

I'm in for #3 Mike. Before I wet sanded my car ,I used rear panel from a 2013 Chevy truck that was wrecked. After the 2 steps of hand sanding and 2 steps of machine sanding there wasn't much room for error with compounding and polishing. The clear coat seemed thin...
