    Help with rust spots

Well, this is interesting. After reading these replies, I re-treated the entire rear lift door with Trix, left it on for a few minutes, scrubbed well with a MF, and rinsed it off. Unfortunately, many tiny rust spots remained on the surface of the paint. Then I decided to try something a little...

    Help with rust spots

Twister and Anarchy, thanks to both of you for your feedback. Yes, the car has been thoroughly clayed already prior to compounding/polishing/sealing. I also washed the whole vehicle down with Trix after the clay step. I will try this again, concentrating only on the tailgate and see what...

    Help with rust spots

I've finished the bulk of the compounding/polishing and am finally getting around to paint touch-ups on my 2008 metallic beige Highlander. The tailgate is a particular challenge and I'd appreciate any help from fellow geeks. Virtually all the rust on the vehicle is concentrated on the tailgate...

    Applying Opti-Coat on wheels

Thanks, great discussion on this topic! So how long do you let the Opti-Coat cure before remounting the wheel and/or driving the vehicle?

    Applying Opti-Coat on wheels

Do you mean those little 100% cotton rounds?

    Applying Opti-Coat on wheels

In your experience, what kind of applicator works best for putting Opti-Coat on wheels? Do you use the same one you would use on the rest of the vehicle? Anybody tried the Wolfgang foam pockets--or maybe cheap 1" wide foam brushes from a hardware store?

Does your Griot's DA say PROFESSIONAL random orbital on the side?

O.K., I removed the rear cover from my GG6: backed off a small phillips-head screw, and it slipped right off. Not a big deal, and I now can see exactly what I have to do to replace the brushes when that eventually becomes necessary. But no DIP switches in sight anywhere. Either there aren't...

Does your Griot's DA say PROFESSIONAL random orbital on the side?

At this point, it is quite clear from both Griot's statements and Mark's testing that the motors themselves are if not absolutely identical, then equivalent current draw (7 amps/850 watts). In other words, pretty much the same. The answer then has to lie somewhere else in his two machines.

Does your Griot's DA say PROFESSIONAL random orbital on the side?

Mark, so far this seems to be the only suggestion you have received from GG to explain what you are experiencing (and what we have seen in your videos). It sounds like a very reasonable theory and suggests that the DIP switches control the calibration of the speed governor. Are you willing to...

Does your Griot's DA say PROFESSIONAL random orbital on the side?

Mike, Thanks for another very informative post! The question in my mind is if that is still true of the GG 6 RO in current production. Point taken. OTOH, there are differences among these three machines, characteristics and features that people need to know about to make an informed buying...

Your knowledge is beyond mine here--thanks for the references!

Does your Griot's DA say PROFESSIONAL random orbital on the side?

Mark, I know next to nothing about detailing, but I do know a little about motors and power tools. Whatever you discover measuring the actual electrical load presented by a given power tool will not really give you a complete picture. This is because the ratings for these tools are complicated...

Does your Griot's DA say PROFESSIONAL random orbital on the side?

With an ammeter (clamp tester) though, you will also need a line splitter to get a reading. A more practical solution for non-electricians would probably be to get a Kill-a-Watt or similar consumer-targeted device; these are widely available online (Amazon, for instance) for around $20.00. The...

How do I handle roof ridges?

Mike and Flash: Many thanks for the quick and detailed responses! Mike, I will look into the scaffolding. It looks like it would be very handy for lots of places where a step ladder would be second best.

How do I handle roof ridges?

The roof of my Toyota SUV has raised parallel ridges running down the back (please see the photo below). I plan to polish the vehicle with a DA using 5.5" pads (the only size I have), but am not sure how to approach the area with the ridges. The paint on the roof is in pretty good shape, so I...

    Need help getting started

Thanks, guys! Another question on the same car: How do I handle the parallel raised ridges on my roof (see the attached photo)? Should I be doing those by hand? I only have 5.5" pads, no smaller pads with small backing plate.
