Yup, or if you're feeling a little adventurous you could apply a clear coat to the plate. I have these custom retro looking license plates for my jeep. I got em and clear coated them with rattle cans. Let the clear harden and cure for about 2 months. And now I just wax the plate every now and then.

Yup, fusion is absolutely right. I've had to replace my headlight casings on my malibu due to the inner condensation. It's a pain but it just happens i guess.

Removing swirls by hand is a lot tougher than machine, but after all it is your choice. But I think in order to actually get anything done you might need a more aggressive polish like Ultimate compound. It did a good job on my malibu, but you have your work cut out for you.
