I have had pretty good luck with Nevr-dull in the past. The safest metal polish I have ever used was English Custom Polish Metal Polish. A guy I used to work with polished his entire frame on his CBR with it and it looked like chrome when he was done.

It all depends if is an enamel, single stage urethane or base/clear urethane.

The license plate and frame. I take them off and wash and wax both. The spare tire area. I make sure I clean out the well and give the tire a once over. It has never been used but you wouldn't believe how much dust and dirt gets in there every six months.

Congratulations on your endeavor. I look forward to seeing the progress. I agree with the changing color aspect. I painted inside the house last year with a ceiling paint that started out pink and then turned pure white. It definitely made painting a lot easier.
