    Why spend $40

Don't know. Nobody's ever checked with a swirl finder light. Wouldn't mind checkin' the honey in my avatar. Bill

    Spotless rinse at car wash

I used to work at a Dealership that had their own semi-automated wash bay with DI water. I'd often pull my El Camino in the bay, wash it by hand, then use the DI rinse. IMO, it was completely safe for my OE lacquer paint and whatever LSP was on it at the time. My only concern with a public...

    Duragloss product definitive guide

I do the same. I'll premix with 601, so I can apply my LSP immediately. If time's not available, I can always apply LSP a week or two later. Don't rule out 105. Not nearly as aggressive of a cleaner as 501, but still does a respectable job with greater longevity. Bill

    Why spend $40

Right now you can buy 2 of the 16X16 PFM towels for $18.95. That's all you need to completely dry anything short of a big SUV. I much prefer the smaller drying towels for their ease of handling and I've not yet found anything thirstier than the PFM's. Bill

Other touch-up paints with SealAct from Dr Color Chip?

After using Dr. CC on a friend's car, I tried a "ghetto" version of the process on my daughter's Honda. I already had some factory touch-up paint, which is lacquer, so I dabbed it in the scratch and wiped it off with a thin cotton cloth stretched over a squeegee, dampened with lacquer thinner...

Fluid Film long term problems for undercoating

Sorry, I forgot to mention the smell. IIRC, this stuff is lanolin-based, derived from sheep. I've never been to a sheep farm, but if that's what they smell like, I won't be visiting one soon. The smell does dissipate in a few days. Bill

Fluid Film long term problems for undercoating

I can't give you a definitive answer, but I've been playing around with Fluid Film a bit since I found it in spray cans at my local Lowes. I do believe it stops rust, based on a couple test areas I've tried on my DD. It must actually dissolve some of the rust, since wiping off the excess leaves...

    Remember The Old Days?

I hear ya. In college, I changed a bunch of Chevy motor mounts with bumper jacks. Jack up one front corner, pull the mount bolts, then let the jack down with a concrete block under the oil pan to suspend the motor and swap the mount. My normal fee was two six-packs plus parts-certainly worth...

    Remember The Old Days?

The bypass hose reference brings back some not-so-fond memories. I worked for a Buick dealer in the 70's. Buicks all had front-mounted distributors and the pre-75 models were points-type ignitions. Drive around in a hard thunderstorm and you'd see Buicks parked on the side of the road. Drive...

    Remember The Old Days?

I don't have to go far to remember all that stuff in Setec's post. Just gotta go downstairs to the garage where my El Camino resides. No points or condenser, but all the other items apply. Bill

    Teach Me About Coatings...For Wheels!

Not to down any of the wheel coatings, but if you want a cheap and easy way to achieve long term resistance to dirt with minimal maintenance, try Finish Kare 1000p sealant. Even on notorious German Cars, this stuff just flat lasts. Bill

Re: One of the strangest looking cars? Wow! I've been a hotrod fan since the 60's and never remember seeing a Zephyr from the postwar era. Doesn't have near the character of the same brand in the prewar days, but still cool. IIRC Mike, didn't you once work on Terry Cook's "Scrape" 40 Zephyr...

    Preserve Steering Wheel Finish/Appearance

I've had leather steering wheels for over 20 years and all have held up well. I follow a few simple guidelines that have worked well for me. First, avoid a death grip on the wheel. I've done some competitive driving and like a pool cue or golf club, a light grip offers the quickest reaction time...

Microfiber towels and HE washing machine

Since my wife uses fabric softener with every load, I wipe the softener dispenser dry and fill it up with cleaning vinegar-about 4 ounces if I had to guess. I use the "normal" cycle with medium spin speed and medium soil level. It's been working fine for me that way. Bill
