Bringing back 50 year old paint

Cool ride! I had a '64 Impala SS 327-300hp 4 speed in my college days. Many fond memories. Having done a number of old lacquer restorations, I heartily endorse a thorough reading of Mike's articles that Paul linked to. Mike usually has some serious time constraints with the cars he does, but if...

Front Load Washer - WAY off Topic

I ran into the "cultural differences" thing earlier this year. Our Bosch Dryer needed repairs (circuit board) that didn't justify the expense, considering the age. My wife wanted to replace both the Washer and Dryer with matching units. She's a native-born German, so products from the fatherland...

What is your method for using a drying aid?

Most of my washes, especially in nice weather, are rinseless, either ONR or most often DG. I'll take a plush MF, dampened and wrung out, then lightly wipe a panel just to break up the accumulations of water. Then I'll fog it with my drying aid (usually DGAW or D156) and wipe dry with another...

Looking for opinions on some new MF's

With fall coming on soon, I'll be doing more rinseless and waterless washes, especially on my Black DD, so I'd like to beef up my towel selection. My current favorites for rinseless GD method washes and waterless wipedowns are TRC's Eagle Edgeless. I'd like to make this purchase from AG and I've...

Looking for a used car, confused by Carfax

I work for a GM Dealer. As for the seatbelt issue, there was a recall on all similar vehicles during that time frame for inspection and possible replacement of the short belt on the drivers side. Any GM dealer can run a GM history report and see details of all warranty repairs. Also, why would...

    ONR as Waterless Solution,

Consider Ultima Waterless Wash Plus+ Concentrate, concentrated waterless auto wash, waterless car wash Ever since I first tried it a few years ago, I moved Opti Clean to interior use only and stopped buying QD products. It's also very economical at 1:42 dilution ratio. Bill

    Cordless battery powered DA polisher?

Back in the 80's, I bought my first cordless drill, a 9.6 volt Makita. After that came 14.4 volt and 18 volt Dewalts. Each step got me more muscle and longer run time, which was offset by the penalty of additional weight and bulk. Now, the one that gets the most use is my 12v Bosch Pocket...

    The Art of Glass Cleaning

My most significant advances came after a long talk with a veteran pro window cleaner. Obviously, they're using squeegees, which I haven't tried yet, but I made some changes in technique that have helped me greatly. First, I use two mf towels. First is a regular mf, used as a "mop" to dislodge...

Rinseless with distilled water = no need to dry?

I tried it-never worked for me. De-ionized is a whole different deal. I never tried it with a rinseless, but I used to have a car wash at work. I'd hand wash my car, then use the de-ionized as a rinse-that worked great. Bill

RUPES Giveaway! Autographed RUPES 21 Mark II Up For Grabs!

Everybody has their favorite mementos of loved ones passed. Growing up as the son of a mechanic who taught me all about using tools and auto repair, mine is my late father's 50's era Snap-On center drawer section, stacked between my 80's top and bottom cabinet. Still getting regular use in my...

    Denatured alcohol

Denatured alcohol is one of the major components in the "secret sauce" used by pro window cleaners, but they all have their own favorite recipe and that's just one item in the mix. Even so, technique counts for a lot. Rather than re-invent the wheel, I'd just stay with my favorite, be it D120...

    GRIOT'S 3 inch orbital buffer

X3 IMO, the Griot's is the "best buy" of the bunch, with a lifetime warranty, adaptability for 3 to 6 inch pads and decent correcting power, all for a reasonable cost. If you get really into it and buy one of the premium polishers later, you'll still find uses for the GG. Personally, I like the...

    Cars from way down south!

Keep those Ute pics coming! I just love seeing them, but it's also torture! I've got a fondness for El Caminos, having owned an '87 since 1993. We were supposed to have a Pontiac version in 2010, called the G8 Sport Truck, but the Fed's frowning on "niche" vehicles during the bankruptcy hearings...

    Car Wash Sponge Recommendations?

My favorites are either the Meguiar's or AG Rinseless Wash Mitt. I like how easily they release dirt with just a healthy shake in the rinseless bucket. I haven't tried either the Griot's MF mitt yet, or the Cobra MF Bone to see how they compare. I'm not a mitt guy, so maybe I'll like the Bone...

    New Cadillac not shiny enough!

I think you're on the right track with M205. Yeah, the GM paint is hard, but your combo of pad & polish will get you a fair amount of correction without removing too much paint. Depending on the results obtained, you may want to consider a repeat pass of M205 with a softer pad to enhance the...

    Buff and Shine Microfiber Pads

Same here. Not that I'm looking forward to a trashed paint job, but it's nice to know I've got the tools available. I did a few spot corrections recently on a Black GM car with M101 and the Buff and Shine MF cutting pad after trying the same compound on a B&S orange foam pad. Night and day...

    Buff and Shine Microfiber Pads

Recently, I was one of the giveaway winners chosen to review the Buff and Shine microfiber pads. I hadn’t any nasty correction projects to do, but had occasion to check the polishing pads out this past Sunday. Seems a family member had inadvertently crossed over a freshly–painted traffic line...
