    Acrylic Lacquer with Clear Coat

Tom, after seeing the pictures, you probably didn't waste your time soaking the paint with #7. I have an '87 El Camino with factory lacquer and do the #7 soak yearly. Yes, it's time and labor intensive, but the moisturizing effect of the #7 makes subsequent polishing processes easier and more...

    Shout out to Duragloss 601/111

That is so true. I first saw the name Duragloss on products at my local Carquest store and the name made me think it was some of those "seen on TV" products from an infomercial. Thanks to members here at AGO, such as RPPM, Richy, Rwright and Dad07, I'm now stocked with an abundance of DG stuff...

    Good Ole Duragloss Aqua Wax

Mix the Aquawax with DG FCS at 1 part AW to 3 parts FCS. One of the brothers from DG recommended it as a drying aid. Apparently, AW, if used too often, can cause some cloudiness from wax buildup, though I've never experienced it myself. Adding the FCS to the mix eliminates that possibility for...

    What Was Your First Car?

1964 Impala SS, 327-300hp, 4spd Muncie, blue buckets and factory in-dash tach. Bought 1969, sold 1971. As we always say, I sure wish I had it today. Bill

    Electric Random Orbital sander

I wouldn't do it. Look at the speed range for that tool, 4,000-12,000 OPM. Even the lowest speed setting is roughly the equivalent to speed "5" on a D/A polisher, mush faster than you would normally use to damp-sand paint. Bill

Help with restoring an old finish

As mentioned, Mike's articles on the use of Meguiar's M07 are a must-read. Here's a link to the collection:All Mike Phillips #7 Show Car Glaze Articles in one place I can personally vouch for the process. The moisturizing effect of M07 makes subsequent polishing so much easier and more...

Winter wheel cleaning without a hose

I use one of the 48 oz. pump sprayers to do my DD wheels in the winter, using ONR or DG Rinseless. After soaking all four wheels and tires down, I'll wet the brush, agitate, then spray again to rinse. Since my wheels always get some FK1000 before winter, rinseless is all I need to get thru PA...

Name something you wish you would’ve bought sooner...

Collinite. Back in the late 70's, I was at a local bar talking detailing with a co-worker. An old guy sitting next to us at the bar set his beer down, looked over at me and said "Collinite, kid, is all you need". I would have saved quite a few bucks if I'd listened to him then, rather than...

    1970 Buick Grand Sport

Looks pretty good under those lights Mike, at least from 20 feet away. I'll bet that color will be absolutely stunning when you're done! Bill

    1970 Buick Grand Sport

A 70 GS Stage I Skylark was the subject vehicle of my most memorable assignment when in college. I was attending General Motors institute, in an engineering co-op program with GM's Hydra Matic Division. Back in those days, you could write a GM Division and request performance modification...

    1970 Buick Grand Sport

Plus, the Buick 455 was considerably lighter than a Chevy or Olds big-block. I have a buddy in Orlando with a 455 Buick in a '37 Chev. When we visit on vacation, I've done a bunch of work on it over the years. It's funny to talk with some of the 60-somethings at a car cruise. Many have a story...

Any solution for wheel bucket organization?

Bucket Boss makes an outside the bucket organizer called the "Wash Boss". AB30060 - Bucket Boss I've had one for over 15 years that's held up well while holding wet brushes constantly. Bill

Best way to wash a classic?

I'm a fan of rinseless washing also. My garage queen El Camino has its original Dark Burgundy, single-stage lacquer, a quite sensitive paint. I've been using ONR, DG, D114 and Ultima rinseless for over 7 years with no ill effects noticed. Once a year or so I do a full hose and buckets process...

Brine alert! This is not a drill!

I spent this past weekend doing a winter prep on my black DD. Clay, polish, re-clean and an application of WG Uber coating. I left it in the garage until it was time to head for work Monday morning. Lo and behold, I found myself behind a brine truck on my commute, with no escape route for almost...

    Coating Single Stage Paint

This may or may not be relevant to your situation, but I'll pass it along FWIW. Back in 2009 I did a single-stage resto on the tired paint of my '87 El Camino, following the directions in Mike's iconic SS paint article. The roof was the worst having been painted with air-dried lacquer around...

You guys throw your drying towels in with other MF's to wash?

Better half was concerned about that from my shop towels after we dropped big bucks on a new HE Maytag. Every wash, whether it's good MF's or ones demoted to shop towels, I wipe out the fabric softener tray and fill it up with cleaning vinegar, which is stronger than normal food-grade white...

    Recovering and reviving poor paint......

I agree with the other BJackson. Back in 2009 I bought a Red Olds Intrigue that spent a considerable time parked under some tall pines with no exterior care. With combination of a fine black dirt, pine needles and sap it looked absolutely miserable. First, I gave it a good wash, using a soft...

Meguiar's D302 (microfiber polish) on a foam pad?

There was a thread on MOL some time ago, where Mike Stoops recommended using D302 with a Meg's foam finishing pad on dark-colored paint. Bill
