Yes more than likely it was the product you were using. When I use Pinnacle Black Onyx, it doesnt leave the applicators looking like a mess like other products. I cant say for sure how many cars you can apply this to, but I will say that a little goes a very long way.

For sure, black paint is exclusive because it shows defects very very well. Compared to lighter colors like silver & white, black paint isnt as forgiving.
